Most people would be more than satisfied with the direction of their life if they graduated from Princeton University. After all it is one of the most prestigious schools in the country. But for a young aspiring hockey player named Darroll Powe, nothing compares to his job nowadays. Myself among many others that enjoy his play are glad he chose to play the game he loves. At 5′11″ 212 lbs, a bit below average height for a center, his speed never fails to amaze me. As an undrafted free agent I honestly didn’t expect much production out of him at [...]

It May Just Be Talk, But…
Last night, while I was writing the New Blood piece on Emery, I was talking with Justin. A couple times a week we talk about the Flyers, prospects, and free agents. We got on the subject of what happened with Eaves so that Boston could clear cap room to re-sign Moriss.
Our question was, then what about Kessel?
As it stands now, he’s a restricted free agent who still hasn’t come to terms on a deal. He made $2.2 million last year, but he’s looking in the neighborhood of $4 million to $5 million per year to re-sign. 60 points (36g 24a) [...]
The New Blood – Ray Emery
Okay, I had a great day off, now I’m ready to talk some Flyers hockey! What better way to start a new week (it is Sunday after all), than with a new segment I like to call, “The New Blood”. The New Blood will be about pick-ups we can expect to see with the Flyers and Phantoms this coming season. The first installment is about the first free agent I started hearing about that actually came to be, Ray Emery.
I’m not even going to ask if you know who Ray Emery is because you’d have to have been living under [...]
Today the Flyers announced the signing of one of my favorite young prospects Marc-Andre Bourdon. When I was watching the 2008 entry draft, I expected a goaltender to be pick in the third round by the Flyers rather than a skater. But there I was, listening to the announcement of Bourdon being selected. The next day I decided to do a little homework on the draft class of the Flyers that year, and was surprised at the ability that they picked in the third round, 67th overall. In a career high 69 games with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the QMJHL, [...]
Cote Carnival – Part 1 of 3
Now, I know the Cote Carnival isn’t for another month (a month from yesterday actually), but I had the opportunity to play some Inbox Tag with Holly Cote, Riley Cote’s wife, on FaceBook today. Nothing too major, just a few questions and I wanted to share them with everyone.
We’ve seen the work you do with the Cote Carnival and the Flyers Wives Carnival. Are there any other charities you hold close to your heart and, if so, what do you do to support them?
Working with the Flyers Wives charities, we actually are involved with many diverse charities in the Philly [...]
Extensions for the… Extended?
I originally wanted to write up a few ideas I had about resigning key impending FAs, but I realized that there aren’t many this year. Jared Ross, Nate Raduns, and Danny Syrvet are all arbitration eligible RFAs at the end of this upcoming season. So then I began to think about extensions, more of who should earn them not who they will go to. I mean as far as I’ve seen, Homer doesn’t make good decisions when it comes to contracts. Chris Pronger’s being an exception to that, that one impressed me. So let us take a look at the [...]
I have to admit, this one is going to be a little tougher for me to write. I’ve been a fan of Martin Biron even before he signed with the Flyers and was overjoyed when I heard he’d be wearing the Orange and Black. I couldn’t wait to see him on the ice and I was one of 17,000 fans chanting his name at the Wach on more than one occasion.
After the 07-08 playoffs came to an end, Marty was scrutinized, but just minorly. We had our top 2 defense men (Timonen and Coburn) out with injuries for the Eastern [...]
Overpriced and Under Qualified?
Many including myself were psyched when Danny Briere was signed a couple years back. Coming off a hot 95 point season he and former teammate Chris Drury were the top centers in the free agent market. But looking back, how smart was the contract given to Briere? Homer doest exactly have a great track record when it comes to long term contracts and extensions. Lets take a look at the details; $52 million over 8 years. Such a big contract for a small guy one would have to imagine.
Listed at 5′10″ 179 lbs, he isn’t the biggest guy out there. [...]
