Competition? What Competition?

AUTHOR: Paul Pickett | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: None Yet

It was made official today that both James vanRiemsdyk and Mika Pyorala have made the Flyers roster. Also making the team are Danny Syvret and Ole Kristian-Tollefsen as the 6th and 7th defensemen respectively. This was all made possible by assigning Randy Jones to the Phantoms, which was also done today.
There still has been no agreement on a contract for center Blair Betts though. Once the complete roster has been released, we’ll know a little more about that situation. But both sides are talking, which is always a good sign.

Time to Fly

AUTHOR: Justin Everitt | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: None Yet

My title would have been a bit different today but one of the Flyers writers for their website, Bill Fleischman, used the title I originally planned. But, now that we jumped that hurdle, let’s have a preview of the team we will be seeing this season. Final announcements have not been made, but, if you have watched the preseason at all I think you would know how much is self explanatory.  The obvious starters would be Ray Emery as starting goaltender and I think its safe to say that Mike Richards will be the number one center. Even with a [...]

Game Wrap: MIN @ PHI 5-4 OTL

AUTHOR: Justin Everitt | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: None Yet

So as I was contemplating my return to the site and what I would write about, I stumbled upon a pair of tickets and decided to use tonight’s game as my return. I’d like to thank Paul for allowing me to come back after I bailed, I hit some hard times and just didn’t want to write. Hopefully he is also okay with me writing a wrap after his.  Now I’m back and extremely excited for the season.
Now on to the subject at hand, tonight’s game. I arrived an hour and a half early thanks to my ride who wanted [...]

Pre-Season Game 7 versus Minnesota Wild

AUTHOR: Paul Pickett | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: None Yet

The pre-season finale tonight at the Wachovia Center had more twists and turns than a Morey’s Piers roller coaster. The Flyers come out firing and jump to an early 1 – 0 lead on a goal by Claude Giroux less than six minutes into the contest. Later in the first period, Mike Richards sets up Mika Pyorala with a one-timer to extend the lead to two going into the locker room.
The Wild started picking up the intensity in the second period which led to an early high-sticking penalty and then a roughing penalty, both on Mike Richards, in the first half [...]

Weekly Wrap Up

AUTHOR: Paul Pickett | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

Welcome to the first installment of my weekly wrap up. This is where we go over all the Flyers games, news and all the other little tidbits that would usually take up a whole column on those other sites.
Our boys went 2-1 last week, beating Detroit and then splitting a home and home with the Devils. While the Flyers almost doubled up their opponent’s scoring (7-4), they’re still showing one of their biggest problems from last season. What problem is that? The bad penalty. 41 – 25 minutes including a 10 minute misconduct. You can have all the talent in the world, but [...]

Pop Quiz Hot Shot!

AUTHOR: Paul Pickett | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

Guess who was placed on waivers today by the Philadelphia Flyers?
If you said Randy Jones, you would be correct.
If Jones clears waivers, expect him to be sent to the Phantoms.
The Rangers are the favorite to claim him outright or ask the Flyers to put him on re-entry waivers to share the cap hit. Either way, this clears enough salary to sign Blair Betts, James vanRiemsdyk and possibly Mika Pyorala.
More to come.

Speaking of Randy Jones…

AUTHOR: Paul Pickett | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: 6 Comments

With my daughter away on a late vacation with my parents, I got the rare opportunity to sleep in today. One of the first things I do when I get on the computer is check my Facebook page. Thanks to my friend Shawn, there was a little present there for me.
While the Flyers are still mulling over who their seventh defenseman is, the club is seriously considering waiving Randy Jones this weekend, NHL sources told CSNPhilly.com.
I rub what’s left of the sleep from my eyes and read it again.
While the Flyers are still mulling over who their seventh defenseman is, [...]

Pre-Season Game 5 vs New Jersey Devils

AUTHOR: Paul Pickett | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

This was my first live experience with the Flyers this season (also my first pre-season game) and I must say, it did not disappoint.
Jersey comes to town and, even though it’s pre-season, expectations and tempers are running high. With Blair Betts almost nailing down a spot on the regular season roster, this essentially leaves one spot available on the forward lines. Who’s gonna get it? Both vanRiemsdyk and Pyorala are both getting their chances to shine and they are making the most of every opportunity. Let’s break down tonight’s game…
James vanRiemsdyk – As the games wear on, he’s moving better [...]
