Pre-Season Game 5 vs New Jersey Devils

AUTHOR: | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: 3 Comments |

This was my first live experience with the Flyers this season (also my first pre-season game) and I must say, it did not disappoint.

Jersey comes to town and, even though it’s pre-season, expectations and tempers are running high. With Blair Betts almost nailing down a spot on the regular season roster, this essentially leaves one spot available on the forward lines. Who’s gonna get it? Both vanRiemsdyk and Pyorala are both getting their chances to shine and they are making the most of every opportunity. Let’s break down tonight’s game…

James vanRiemsdyk – As the games wear on, he’s moving better and better without the puck. When he has it, it’s a sight to be seen. He had some great chances tonight, but Brodeur stopped him on all 3 shots including a wrist shot that was destined to find twine in the 3rd period.

Mika Pyorala - Mika is one of those players that just when you think you’ve seen everything he’s had to offer, he shows you a little bit more. Example? That lightning snap shot that beat Brodeur high to the glove side in overtime to give the Flyers a 2-1 victory, therefore ruining Brodeur’s pre-season debut for the Devils.

Granted, this was Mika’s 2nd goal of the pre-season (he also has an assist) and JVR has 3 and an assist. Not to mention his stunning, 5 point performance in the rookie game versus Washington. This chase is going to come down to the wire.

Matt Carle notched his first goal of the pre-season on a set-up pass from behind the red line by Daniel Briere for the game’s first tally only eleven minutes into the contest. It would stay that way until 8:17 of the third when a loose puck going through the crease, behind Ray Emery, was poked in by Matt Halischuk to tie the score at 1.

Ray Emery played the whole game and looked as good as ever making 31 saves on the night.

Daniel Briere had assists on both Flyers goals and ran his pre-season scoring total to a team leading 5 points (3 goals, 2 assists) in 5 games. He has looked strong, skated well and his passing has improved after an injury plagued 08-09 campaign.

The Flyers have Friday off before rolling into Newark on Saturday to take on the Devils on their home ice. The game isn’t televised, but it should be on 610WIP on your AM dial or you can find them online at www.610WIP.com.

Until then, keep your chin up, your eyes on the puck and you can never go wrong with high to the stick side. ;)

P.S. – Yes, I didn’t write about the home game on Tuesday versus the Detroit Red Wings. I couldn’t find a feed that was working to watch the game so I was listening to it on 610WIP. For some reason, I just can’t seem to really talk about a game that I’m listening to and not watching. So here’s a heads up now that any games on TCN (Comcast Cable, not Comcast Sportsnet) that I can’t find a feed for, I will not be writing about. Sorry for any confusion. :)

Yeah, I remember watching him leave the puck at center ice, where there was ALL WHITE jersey's, & saying "AHH, WHAT ARE YOU DOING, JONES?! YOU STEAL THE PUCK, JUST TO GIVE IT BACK! UGH, GOTTA GO!"

You know, I think you're right! I think he thinks they kept Syvret because they're trying to determine weather he [Syvret,] or Tollefsen is going to be the 7th defensmen. I honestly believe he thinks he's "untouchable," when the only "untouchables" are Richards, Carter, Giroux, Pronger, Timonen, & POSSIBLY (with as well as he's played thus far) JvR - that still remains to be seen for an entire season, but thus far I have to think if he continues playing this way, he'd be considered an untouchable WAYYY before Jones! Heck, PARENT would be considered untouchable in many's eye BEFORE Jones!

Okay, done ranting. I'll just keep hoping he's gone before the game in Carolina next week, but I refuse to get my hopes too high.

I didn't want to make this recap all about my problems with Jones, but the most commonly spoken phrase by me at the game was...

"Jones, you're killing me!"

Even though he was paired with Coburn, the number of mistakes he makes is too many and they're obvious. I don't think he realizes that there's a reason Danny Syvret wasn't sent to the Phantoms with the other cuts.

Great post!

The only thing I have to add is Jones has to go! I knew it was only a matter of time before the real Randy Jones shined through. I saw at least 5 mistakes by him tonight, that could have been costly! Lucky for him, Emery was ready, but he seriously drives me CRAZY! You don't leave the puck at center ice, where NONE of your teammates are, & watch a Devil skate toward it (that was the biggest, stupidest mistake I saw tonight.) Absolutely crazy!

As I said before, though, because I want him gone, & it would make me happy, it won't happen! It's just a trend I've noticed with me!

Keep up the great work, Paul! :)
