Weekly Wrap Up

AUTHOR: | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: 2 Comments |

Welcome to the first installment of my weekly wrap up. This is where we go over all the Flyers games, news and all the other little tidbits that would usually take up a whole column on those other sites.

Our boys went 2-1 last week, beating Detroit and then splitting a home and home with the Devils. While the Flyers almost doubled up their opponent’s scoring (7-4), they’re still showing one of their biggest problems from last season. What problem is that? The bad penalty. 41 – 25 minutes including a 10 minute misconduct. You can have all the talent in the world, but with no discipline, its gonna be a long season.

While everyone is keeping an eye on the battle for a roster spot between James vanRiemsdyk and Mika Pyorala, it’s easy to overlook people that already have their spots. I really shouldn’t mention Daniel Briere since he didn’t play on Saturday, the Flyers only loss of the week. I’m also not saying that they lost because he didn’t play, but in the 3 previous games before Saturday, 4 games overall, he had those 5 points I mentioned in another article. The injury problems that hindered him a season ago are gone and the Danny the Flyers signed as a free agent has returned.

Speaking of injuries, we’ve had our first injury scare and it’s still the pre-season. Brian Boucher came up with an undisclosed “lower body injury” eleven minutes into what was scheduled to be his first full game of the pre-season. He’ll be out 7 – 10 days and Johan Backlund has been called up from the Phantoms to take his place but may not see any time.

Danny Syvret also took a wicked hit on Thursday and smashed his mouth on the dasher on the way down, chipping one of his front teeth and loosening four others. He didn’t miss a shift though.

The biggest news came yesterday with the demotion of Randy Jones to the waiver wire. While Homer denies it before it happened and then claims it was a hard decision afterwards, those of us with a shred of hockey knowledge know this was an inevitability. Being one of a handful of fans who were actually excited when Jones came off the IR last season, the events leading up to this were rather disturbing. But, when it comes right down to it, it is all for the greater good. Jones was slated to draw a $3,000,000 salary with a $2,750,000 cap hit. With his cap hit, here’s who the Flyers are able to sign/bring up:

James vanRiemsdyk – $875,000
Mika Pyorala – $500,000
Blair Betts – $650,000
Danny Syvret – $575,000

There’s an extra $150,000 left over bringing their cap space up to a shade over $1.7 million.

Sorry you had to be a cap casualty, Randy.

And there you have it folks. All the news that’s fit to talk about. The boys practice tomorrow before welcoming the Wild into the Wachovia Center on Tuesday. The game will be on the Flyers Official Website at Flyers.NHL.com. Check in after the game for my post-game analysis.

Until then, keep your chin up, your eyes on the puck and you can never go wrong with high to the stick side. ;)

Danny Briere was a free agency acquisition. The Flyers did not trade for him.
