Lesson Learned: Capital Punshment

AUTHOR: Eugene Markman | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

So the Caps beat the Flyers yesterday, 5-3. Briere scored in garbage time, so the score does not tell the entire story.  On the other hand, Flyers held a 33-22 shot advantage, that indicates them carrying the play a bit. But neither the score nor that stats tell the true tale. I think it was a fun game to watch, with a lot of back and forth action. Each team had some kick ass chances. Jose Theodore had a better game than Ray Emery.  Emery gave out some juicy rebounds, but I’m not going to blame him for the loss. [...]

Flyers-Caps: Serious test for Philly

AUTHOR: Eugene Markman | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: None Yet

A few days after the disappointing stinker against Toronto, the Flyers head to D.C. to take on the red-hot Capitals.  While the Flyers have been winning a lot of games lately, they’ve mostly been against either garbage teams, or good teams in the midst of a dry spell.  That ends today.  I hope the Flyers reviewed some tape of the last meeting between these teams. Quick recap:

Ovechkin did not play due to a 2 game suspension.
Caps won 8-2.
Carcillo knocked out Matt Bradley before Bradley could get his gloves off.
I yelled at the TV, a lot.

So now, the Flyers have a [...]

Leafs Light Up Leighton, Flyers

AUTHOR: Eugene Markman | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

Wow, what a way to end a solid winning streak.  This game was not the slugfest that I anticipated after their meeting last week.  The Leafs won 4-0, because the Flyers decided to play similar to the style that cost John Stevens his job. Turnovers, odd-man rushes, poor defensive decisions, inability to score, and bad goaltending all contributed to this loss.  I won’t blame Leighton on the first two goals, but the second pair were way too soft.  He was completely unscreened, but got beat up high. In case your not fully up on common sense hockey, here’s a quick [...]

Proof: Penguins Cheat!

AUTHOR: Eugene Markman | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

In the midst of the Flyers complete domination of the Penguins, a very controversial goal by Simon Gagne was disallowed.  No camera angle showed the puck in the net, but angles did show the goalie sweeping the puck out of the net.  Because of the wording of the replay rules, the war room officials were not allowed to assume the puck was in, but had to have visual proof. Apparently, the reason that the war room officials had no visual proof, is because the video guy in Pittsburgh didn’t send it! Flyers Extened Tampa’s Power Outage

AUTHOR: Eugene Markman | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

A night after the TB-NJ game was suspended due to a power outage, the Flyers easily handled the Lightning for a 4-1 win.  Claude Giroux ripped a nice one-timer into the net, and Scott Hartnell ended a 17 game drought to give the Flyers a 2-0 lead. After TB cut the lead in half, Blair Betts added a 4-on-4 goal and an empty netter to ice the game.
Because of the Eagles and Stinking Cowboys wild-card game starting an hour after this one, I only watched the first period.  What I did see was a dominant Flyers team, that has continued [...]

Furious Flyers Fury Sends Fluery and Pens Packing

AUTHOR: Eugene Markman | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

The Flyers lit up the Penguins 7-4 last night in a thriller! JVR and Carter each scored a pair, Matt Carle and Chris Pronger scored to represent the bluelines, and Mike Richards added an insurance empty netter.  Finally, we’re starting to see the differences between John Stevens’ system and Peter Laviolette’s.  The Penguins looked scared, even when they had the puck.  It seemed like every time the Flyers tried to forecheck, it worked.  As the Flyers ferociously closed in on the Penguins D, you could see the scared looks on their faces. The Flyers hit them hard, time and time [...]

Flyers Handcuff Leafs, Ravage Them

AUTHOR: Eugene Markman | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: 5 Comments

“If he dies…he dies.” – Ivan Drago (This game was more like the Drago-Creed fight. Leave Rocky out of it.)
Now that was a full 60 minute hockey game, Broad Street Bullies style. The Philadelphia Flyers put a bad hurting on the Toronto Maple Leafs, winning the game 6-2.  I hope the Leafs have some international roaming plans, because they’ll be crying to their mommies after this one.
The Flyers lead 2-0 after a first period that saw them dominate puck control and forecheck aggressively. It seemed that any time they wanted to steal the puck, they did. The game began with some [...]

Sens Beat Flyers with Ugly Stick

AUTHOR: Eugene Markman | IN: Flyers | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Wow. What an atrocious way to follow up the Winter Classic. Alexei Kovalev scored 4 goals and the Sens beat the Flyers 7-4 on Sunday.  The Flyers showed some heart after falling behind 4-1 in the first period.  They tallied 3 times in the second period to tie the game at 4, carrying momentum into the third.  Unfortunately, they laid a big goose-egg, and got torched for 3 goals.  There’s no excuse for this sort of play.  They have 19 games in the next 6 weeks before taking a break for the Olympics.  They need to start working harder, playing more [...]
