Kate Smith, it’s time to flex those golden pipes. The Flyers need you tonight. 20,000 crazy fans are packing the Wachovia Center tonight, all of us hoping to see the Flyers stretch the series to one more game. I won’t be shocked to hear “God Bless America” in place of the National Anthem tonight. Boston laid a fat goose egg in the last game; I don’t think it will be so easy this time around. Wednesday night’s Bruins were heartless punks, who only showed some fight when the result was well in hand. I think the group that comes to town on Friday will be a bit different. This game will be harder than the last, but I think the Flyers are ready for it.
Leighton seems healthy, and he’s the best choice we have left. He’s the key to this whole puzzle. As much as I’ve bashed him, the team has won for him. The Flyers are playing well, and there’s no reason to think things will change. Laviolette has them playing smart, hard, and disciplined. The only thing that can stop them now is shoddy goaltending. Avoid the softies, and things will be ok. Judging by Game 5, Savard has played pretty much as expected. He’s a smart guy, but he’s not at full game speed yet. He shows flashes of what he can do, making some nice passes, but he’s not totally noticeable yet. The rest of the Bru-crew is playing up to their rep. as well. With all of that said, I like the Flyers chances.
Last night, I watched the HBO special about the Broad Street Bullies. Opposing fans and idiots in the national media love compare those teams from the 70’s to the teams of today, and say that nothing has changed. Ok, the Flyers still are near the top of the league in fights and penalties, but it’s still different. Teams are no longer scared to come to Philly due to fear of a physical beating. NHL has put enough rules in place to stop that strategy. And we no longer have an MVP candidate season after season. But like those teams, this group has a creative coach, that gets them mentally prepared. This group gets along well, and has it’s own fun mix of characters. And of course, there’s always us – The Fans. We’re gonig to be loud, we’re going to be nuts, and we’re going to be a factor. And most importantly, we will see a Game 6 victory by the Flyers.
