Spring Classic

Final Showdown

Game 7.  Game f’in 7!  Will we see a collapse tonight by Boston? I sure hope so. After falling into a near bottomless pit, the Flyers are one win away from on hell of an awesome comeback. Before the series began, I did say Flyers in 7. I had no idea the series would go the way it’s gone, but here we are. Both teams are banged and bruised. The first 6 games mean nothing now. The only thing that matters tonight is who wants it more.

What makes the hockey playoffs better and tougher than any other playoffs is how much harder it is to win. It’s as physical as football, with far more games. It’s more exciting than baseball because it moves at a faster pace. And it trumps basketball because there are far more upsets and surprises. Winning every playoff round takes a ton of grit and determination. Flyers have shown that they have the balls to compete just by making it this far. We’ve all heard the statistics about how hard it is just to level a series at 3, let alone complete the comeback. And they’ve shown the mental toughness and willpower by not giving up and taking things this far. They want it badly, they’re playing well, and they deserve to win.

But I can’t compeltely rule out the Bruins. Despite the injuries, and despite the fact that Flyers have mostly carried the play, 4 of the 6 games were decided by one goal.  Going into the series I thought the teams matched up well, and it looks like they have. Despite failing miserably to close out the series, the Bruins aren’t dead yet. They get to go home, and I’m sure the crowd will be pretty intense.  They had some good stretches during Game 6, and if they play like that tonight, they have a really good chance.

During the regular season, the Flyers marketing campaign was called Relentless. It focused on the teams relentless pursuit of the Stanley Cup.  Right now, the motto has shift to “History Will Be Made”.  And why not?  With Richards hunting Chara, Leighton stopping all comers, Gagne and Briere scoring clutch goals, and Pronger clearing the porch, the only thing they have to do is play a full 60, and they’ll get the big W. We’ve made it this far, we’re better, and we’re hungry. It will be close, it will be hard, but we will witness history.  LET’S GO FLYERS!!!
