So after a long, up-and-down season has ended, this time with a little more agony than usual, Summer is officially here. That usually means ice cream, bikini’s, no school for the kids, baseball, World Cup Soccer, and no hockey. Well, the players might have unlaced their skates for the summer, but I will still be here. We’ve got more reviews of the past season, the draft, free agency, possible trades, and eventually, previews for a new season. Here’s a sneak peek on what lies ahead:
Unrestricted Free Agents (according to http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/):
- Arron Asham
- Mika Pyorala (remember him?)
- Lukas Kraijcek
- Michael Leighton
Restricted Free Agents:
- Daniel Carcillo
- Darroll Powe
- Braydon Coburn
- Ryan Parent
- Danny Syvret
NHL Entry Draft:
The draft is June 25-26, in Los Angeles. As of right now, we don’t have a pick in the first two rounds. The first round pick was part of the Pronger trade, the 2nd round pick was shipped away in another minor deal. So barring trades, there probably won’t be much to report on here. Of course, years from now we may look back at some great player that we got really lat in the draft. You never know, right? Pavel Datsyuk was a 6th round pick. If you do want some good draft coverage from around the league, check out our main NHL page, Too Many Men on the Site. There will be tons of updates as the draft approaches.
I’ll be looking back at our line-up and will try to see how I would change it. A few hints on what’s to come: We have too many centers, and not enough natural wingers. Do we trade Carter, Briere, neither, someone else? I don’t the answer yet myself, but we’ll get to that. Also, Gagne is entering the last season of his contract. He was born on a Leap Year, so he’s only 8 1/2. In real human years, he’s 30. Do we re-sign him, or do we look to move him? Also, Giroux is a RFA after this season. Do we lock him up long-term? Seems like an easy answer (YES!), but is it (I dunno)?
Any time you talk about the Flyers potential for winning the Cup, goaltending is ALWAYS the biggest question. The first post I ever wrote for this site was about Ray Emery, and whether he would be good enough to backstop this team all the way. Seems to me, he was good enough. Unfortunately, he was injured and never got his chance to prove me right. So the carousel ride continues. Will Emery be healthy enough to play next season (or ever)? Do we sign Leighton and give him the job? Boucher is under contract, is he now the starter? There’s also a few older, but proven guys, that might be available (Turco, Nabokov, Theodore, Toskala, Biron). Any of them worth it? We’ll see.
I’m sure I’ll come up with more stuff to talk about, hopefully something that will keep you interested.
