The annual NHL Awards Ceremony is on tonight, and we’ll be having a live chat on our main NHL site, Too Many Men on the Site.
Here are the nominees, and my predicted winners:
Hart Trophy – MVP
- Sidney Crosby
- Alex Ovechkin
- Henrik Sedin
Prediction: They all had similar numbers, so you pretty much gotta look at who carried their team more. I give Ovechkin his 3rd in a row because the Washington Capitals ran away with the President’s Trophy, and he’s the unquestionable leader of the team.
The Ted Lindsay award is for the MVP as voted by the players. It has the same candidates this year as the Hart, and I’ll go with the same winner. (Note: the award was knows as the Lester Pearson Award prior to this season)
Norris Trophy – Best defenseman
- Duncan Keith
- Drew Doughty
- Mike Green
Prediction: The playoffs have no impact on this award, so I think Mike Green walks away with this one. Doughty might be more deserving because he’s a better defensive player, but I think East Coast bias, along with a lot better offensive numbers, helps Green.
Vezina Trophy – Best Goalie
- Martin Brodeur
- Ilya Bryzgalov
- Ryan Miller
Prediction: Voters might be swayed by Miller’s Olympic performance, but I’ll go out on a limb and pick Bryzgalov for this one. Like the rest, he had an incredible year. I think he plays for a much worse team though, and he’s the reason they had such a great season.
Frank J. Selke – best defensive forward
- Pavel Datsyuk
- Ryan Kesler
- Jordan Staal
Prediction: Datsyuk is the best pickpocket in the league, and easily the smartest and most talented of the three. He gets this one.
Lady Bing Trophy – most gentlemanly play
- This is hockey; it’s not about being polite. I’m skipping this bullshit.
Jack Adams Award – Best coach
- Barry Trotz, Nashville
- Dave Tippett, Phoenix
- Joe Sacco, Colorado
Prediction: The Coyotes were on the verge of bankruptcy, moving, and had just parted ways with The Great One. Not to mention, they were bottom dwellers for a long, long time. Tippett took a horrible situation, and put in a perfect system for the talent level he had to work with, and it resulted in a tight race for the division and possibly the conference’s best record. He easily gets the nod here.
Calder Trophy – Rookie of the Year
- Jimmy Howard
- Matt Duchesne
- Tyler Myers
Prediction: I honestly didn’t follow these guys much, so I’m taking a random guess and picking Myers. And for the record, I’m glad Tavares isn’t up for consideration. Most of his goals are ugly or lucky, and he has yet to prove worthy of a #1 pick.
There are a few awards that simply need to be presented, for which we already know the winners:
Art Ross – Top scorer – Henrik Sedin
Maurice Richard – Top Goal Scorer – Sidney Crosby and Steve Stamkos
William Jennings – Lowest team goals against – Martin Brodeur
President’s Trophy – Best Regular Season Record – Washington Capitals
Finally, there are a few awards for community service, leadership, and those kinds of things. It’s not on the ice, and while it’s great to be recognized for something, I don’t have a clue how to guess these things.
