The 1-2 Punch (Courtesy: zimbio.com)

Sunday was all about LA. Boring old LA. First a crappy hockey game, followed by an even crappier Grammy Award Ceremony.

The game was moved from 7:00 to 3:00, and our boys just didn’t seem right the whole time. Drew Doughty scored for LA in the 2nd period, and J-Quick made the lead hold up. For the first two periods, the Flyers looked like a bunch of scrubs in a pickup game.  Passes bounced off of sticks, forechecking was light, shots were plenty, but not very difficult. Once in a while somebody tried to go in solo, and would lose the puck fairly easily once they crossed the blue line. Things changed a bit more once the final 20 came, with LA sitting back and waiting.

The Flyers got things a bit more organized, but still couldn’t dominate the way we know they should.  When they did get dumps in, and started a forecheck, they couldn’t maneuver the puck in front for any really quality shits. Once in a while the Kings broke down and we managed a few solid shots from the point, but couldn’t redirect it past JQ or make him pay for any rebounds. He’s one of the best goalies in the league, and aside from a few saves here and there, we didn’t challenge him enough.  On one hand, yes we had 40 shots. Still, less than 5 of them were of any challenge to him. That’s not going to cut it.

Calling out names:

  • Ville Leino & Scott Hartnell – I’m putting them together because both had the same mistakes and are on the same line. Neither one fired of quick shots when the had ample opportunities. Each of them lost battles in the corners that they usually win.  Both of them were knocked off the puck with ease. I specifically remember one play when Hartnell got a pass in the slot, and instead of firing a one timer, he pulled ittohis backhand and fired a weak shot.
  • Dan Carcillo – if you’re going to drop your gloves with a rookie, try not to hurt his fist so much with your face
  • Jody Shelley – if your going to drop your gloves with another fighter, try not to hurt his fist so much with your face
  • Nikolai Zherdev – He was a healthy scratch in this game after playing like shit against Carolina. (See next page)
