As the news broke yesterday about the Flyers acquisition of Kris Versteeg from Toronto, I started to wonder where exactly he fit in. How good was he in Chicago? Is he definitely going to helps us out? Where does he fit in and who does he replace in the lineup?
We’ve all come to love how Peter Laviolette has this team playing. He constantly mixes and matches players, usually getting effective results, tons of offense, and most importantly, wins. Now we get to add a player to the mix that can contribute in all facets of the game. And rumor has it that he’ll start out playing with the captain tonight against Tampa. Versteeg looks exactly like the type of player that should be on Richies line. Check out this highlight clip.
What I see is a guy that should be an instant hit in the locker room. I see a guy that will work hard on the ice, and contribute on and off the scoresheet. He’ll fight when necessary, and pretty much do anything asked of him. Last years Blackhawks were a good, young, fast-paced team. But the Flyers were just as good in every area of the ice. This year, we’re even better. And Lavy now has a proven commodity to work with. He knows this guys is a winner, and will do whatever is asked of him for the good of the team. Happy Valentines Day indeed!
So now the only problem is figuring out who loses their spot in the lineup. Seeing as how Zherdev was recently benched for Shelley, that looks like the pivot spot. With Versteeg in the mix, both of those guys will be relegated to the bench most likely. However, we all know that once Zherdev gets jump started, he’s a valuable offensive asset. Keeping him in the press box for the rest of the season is a big waste. So he’ll probably come in from time to time for either Nodl or Powe, depending on how much Versteeg can fill their roles on the PK. It’s a lot to think about, and I have full faith in the man paid to make all of these decisions.
Finally, when I was looking at that highlight clip on YouTube, I noticed under the suggestions on the right panel another clip, completely unrelated, but worthy of being posted. So for your random viewing pleasure, please enjoy this:
