For the last few seasons, the Toronto Maple Leafs have sucked. They haven’t smelled the playoffs since the lockout. And this year, it looked like it would be more of them same. But after having a fire sale over the last few weeks, things are looking up for them. They’re actually within a few points of 8th place, and a possible first round date with our very own Flyers. They’ve gotten rid of some of their better players, and in turn, have become a better team for it. However, a tightly held secret is that they’ve also began alternative training. Rather than hold traditional hockey practices, this is what they do to prepare:
After going through that process, they send a car package to every team that they’re about to play. And of course, it’s impolite to just ignore that care package, so you have to put it to some good use:
The problem is when the Leafs opponents start putting maple syrup on everything, they just can’t stop. They start pouring it on everything in sight, and just eating up until game time. And that leads to teams not playing their best, and Toronto taking advantage. Tonight, when we finally get back to playing after yet another layoff, we will not be fooled by their ruse. Tonight, the Flyers will come to play.
After shitting the bed against Ottawa, they were embarrassed, and Laviolette was mad. During the Q&A of the VIP Event on Monday, the players alluded to hard practice from the morning. They mentioned skating a lot, and not doing many puck drills. In addition to tough practices, I’m sure quite a few of them have been watching some games lately. And if you’ve noticed, the inensity is going up a few notches. Many teams are switching into playoff mode. Checking is tighter, scoring is tougher, and winning is much, much harder.
Playing a team that’s already in desperation mode with 18 games left on their schedule will be a good test, and a wake-up call. The Leafs had an emotional win last night at home against the Pens. Kessel and Grabovski are playing well lately, scoring a few goals. Phaneuf is always a beast, and on the winning goal last night looked like the guy that was nominated for the Norris Trophy a few seasons ago. A few months ago, I would have laughed at this team and called it an easy victory. But during this last stretch, there are no more easy games. Pretty much every team will be coming to play. But if the Flyers show up, they can squash any hopes of an upset tonight.
Note: I will be making a post in the near future with pictures and video’s of that VIP Event, catching you up on anything that you missed.
