Flyers Van Gogh

It’s Saturday night, and the Flyers visit the Stars in Big D.

In art, heavy usage of blue represents sadness.  Vincent Van Gogh had a Blue Period, in which he only painted using shades of blue.  Eventually, he snapped out of it, using more color in his work.  These last few weeks the Flyers have been stuck in their own blue period.  Losses, blown leads, inability to play consistent, and easy turnovers have plagued them.

It’s about time to sprinkle a little color into their game. Part of the reason they become complacent was their level of competition. We mowed down the good teams, surged ahead in the standings, and began to sleep walk against inferior foes. As a fan, it sucks to watch; but the players are human. They need to constantly find motivation throughout the long season. The Stars are a good opponent for us to get this masterpiece of a season going again.

Don’t gauge this team based on the All-Star game.  They’ve got plenty of firepower in the lineup.  Their scariest player is Brad Richards,  He’s easily the most underrated player in the last 5 years. During talks about the best players in the league, he rarely gets mentioned. And for a long time, this team battled for the top spot in the West.  They are the first in a stretch of games against good teams.

And aside from Pronger, I think everyone on the team is healthy and starting to play well again.  More and more I’m noticing guys doing little things right. It’s not perfect, but we’re getting there.  The effort is getting better too, and we know how scary good the Flyers are when they’re trying hard. It’s been a while since the flu rattled the lineup, and guys are completely getting their strength back.  Carter, Giroux, Briere and Richards are starting to shine again, and that’s exactly what we needs.  Depth at center, and solid D is what this team is built on, and what this team relies upon for success.

Tonight, hopefully, will be a big step back towards regaining the respect teams gave us when we were rolling through everyone. Go Flyers!
