Q’s: Is this Flyers team really going to get defeated in the first round? Are we really going to get upset? Is this offense going to remain stale and scoreless?
A’s: No. NO. NO!
We will not go quietly into the night!” We will not vanish without a fight!
President Thomas Whitmore, Independence Day
This team shook off their rust in game one. They got their legs back. They got their energy back. Not everything went according to plan, but it’s headed in that direction. But after losing game one, getting shut out, and booed by the home crowd, there is a new motivation. Anger. Nobody likes to get embarressed. And we are not in a corner. It is not too late to respond. This was not an elimination game. This was a game that woke up the giant.
I expected Pronger back in Game 1, but that didn’t happen. Game 2, possibly. If not, then we march onward without him. But we don’t need him yet. Mike Richards is here, and that’s all we need. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times: the team goes as he goes. He’s won at every level of his career. Defeat is not something he’s used to, not something he stands for, and not something he enjoys. I don’t give two shits how he, or anybody else, treats the media. All I care about is his play on the ice. And whenever he is questioned, he usually comes up big. He will not allow this team to go quietly into the night. He will not allow us to sit back and take our lumps. Richards will lead us as far as he can. And the team will respond to how he plays.
Coming into his rookie year, the team fed their usual hype. They told us he was a good all around player, and a natural leader. What else would you expect them to say about their first round draft pick? In his first year, Jeff Carter and RJ Umberger were fellow newcomers, and also good players. I rarely invest in jersey’s, but I knew I needed something fresh. Either in the middle of that season, or maybe towards the end, I was convinced I needed one with the #18 stitched on the back. So far, time has proven this investment worthy. Umberger is gone, and while Carter is scoring goals, Richards is the man. Don’t forget everything he’s capable of, and that he’s still young enough to do more.
