These lowlights have a common theme: sloppy defense by the Flyers.
Don’t be mad at our goalies for sucking. Nobody ever told us they are top of the line netminders that will win games for us. We weren’t promised anything regarding them. Coaches and players have simply said they have enough faith in the goalies to be good in net. They never said anything about them being great. So when they are left hanging out to dry, they won’t come up with every save. That’s why we built one of the best group of defensemen in the league.
Chris Pronger, Kimmo Timonen, Andrej Meszaros, Braydon Coburn, Matt Carle, and Sean O’Donnel are charged with the task of making life easier for the goalies. Yes, the forwards have defensive responsibilities too, but it’s the D-men whose core job is to protect the net. Everything else is secondary to that. Limiting shots, and allowing easy to save shots are paramount to anything and everything else they have to do. Looking back at the Bruins goals in Game 1 is sickening. Plain and simple, we weren’t physical enough. This is how close we need our guys to be to their forwards.
On one hand, I love big hits and if we mix that into our play, I’m fine with that. But I know we don’t necessarily need that. We do need to be physical. We do need to be right on them, at all times. Every player in the NHl is dangerous if given time and space. Make them earn it! If they’re going to win, make them actually beat us. Nothing feels worse than knowing you didn’t try hard enough, and do things as best as you can. The Flyers know they are a better team. The Bruins know it too. But that only matters if they play hard. Offense takes skill, defense takes effort.
That’s what it will take to win tonight, tomorrow, and further down the road.
