There is a great episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia where Dennis Reynolds teaches everyone about his way of making women fall for him. It includes lies, deceit, and other methods. But…it works (in the show). Turns out, the Flyers did that exact thing to us, the fans.D – DemonstrateValue
They won. A lot. They didn’t just win though. They destroyed everyone in their path. They did with wave after wave of attack. They had the deepest team in the league on paper, and they played like it.
E – Engage Physically
They got us out of our seats. They had us loading up on merchandise. We were completely Flyer-ed up. When the team on games, we felt like a huge part of that.
N – Nurture Dependence
It was an 82 game season, and we were along for the ride. When they destroyed teams, we couldn’t look away. If we blinked, we’d miss something amazing. When they started to lose, they told us they could flip a switch at any time. They reminded us that when things matter most, they come through in the clutch.
N – Neglect Emotionally
All of a sudden, losses started piling up. They didn’t care that games turned boring. They didn’t care that we were becoming so worried. And if there was turmoil, injuries, or anything else, we weren’t really told. The goalie rotation became confusing, and we weren’t given straight answers. All of a sudden, it was as if we simply had to sit and wait for the playoffs, and should just keep cheering no matter what.
I – Inspire Hope
A game vs Pittsburgh, we completely destroyed them. We won the division. The playoffs began, and we seemed to struggle against Buffalo. We fell behind, took the lead, then fell behind. Finally, we turned things on and destroyed them. Just utterly obliterated one of the greatest goalies in the world. Finally, we thought, the real Flyers have come to play.
S – Separate Entirely
Aside from one game, they looked completely lost. They couldn’t pull off a win. They couldn’t score. They didn’t fight back. They took their beating, got swept. And just like that, an amazing season ends all too soon.
And what do the fans have left? Are we going to give up on this team and forget about them? No, of course not. We’ll be back. We always come back. They’ll change one or two things, promise us that they’ll do things differently, and we’ll believe it. Next season, on opening day, we’ll pack the building and scream til we’re hoarse. Why? Because..we’ve been DENNIS’d.
