Last year, we exiled Simon Gagne to Tampa. He suffered through injuries for most of the season, and didn’t become very effective until the playoffs rolled around. But he wasn’t really the same player that he’d been in Orange and Black. But now, the 5 year deal that he originally signed with us has expired. Is it worth bringing him back?
Well, the first thing to look at his how much money he wants. If he’s looking to make similar to what he made in the contract that just expired, then he’s just not worth it anymore. His $5.25M cap hit is too high of an asking price. If he’s willing to come down to $3M, now we’re talking.
Money aside, is he a player that can help the Flyers? Well, if he’s healthy, then hell yes. He’s one year removed from being a player that came through in the clutch a lot for us. He’s 31, which is a bit over the hill, but not old by any means. We know exactly what he can bring to the table. He can add some scoring punch from the wing, and we can definitely use some help on the PK. He’s an all around smart player. He’s loved playing here, he’s familiar with playing here, so he wouldn’t need to buy into a new system.
The biggest question, of course, is his health. I’m not a dcotor, nor have I stayed in a Holdiay Inn lately, so it’s hard for me to judge. A lot of his game depends on his speed. I’m sure he’s not as fast as he once was, but if he’s still fast in general, then he’s worth a shot. It’s how he avoids hits, creates chances, comes back on defense. Speed is crucial to Simon Gagne, and a fast Gagne is worth offering a contract to.
Wouldn’t it be cool to have this back:
