Foe: Colorado Avalanche

I love the Flyers, and no other team. I want us to win a Cup, and there is no other team that I accept as an alternative. There are 29 other fanbases that feel the same way about their own club. We all have one goal, and we all have an effect on one another. Since our Fansided Network is doing a 30 day preview to get ready for the 2011-12 season, I’ll be looking at how much of a threat each team is to our own Cup hopes. Today, we have the Colorado Avalanche.

These are not the same Avalanche that had Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg and Patrick Roy and Adam Foote, etc. That was a team full of star power, that competed for the Presidents Trophy and won a pair of Stanley Cups. That is the pre-lockout Avalanche. The current version has missed the playoffs 3 times in the last 6 years, and only won 2 playoff series. Two out of the last three years they were in the bottom 2 of the Western Conference. finally, this offseason, they decided it’s time to get back on the path of NHL relevance. They acquired Semyon Varlamov from Washington, and got him a Cup winning backup in JS Giguere.  They have a young nucleus lead by the very underrated Paul Stastny. They still don’t have a ton of big names like in the past, but they are very similar to the Blackhawks of a few seasons ago in that they have a bunch of unknowns with a ton of potential. If they can put it together, they can be a surprise team in the West, especially considering they play in a division with Calgary, Edmonton and Minnesota.

This is the third straight day that we’re previewing a team from the West. And this is a team that’s hoping to rise up out of oblivion.  They didn’t overhaul the roster quite like the Flyers did a few years back after our own miserable season, but they still made a few changes over the last 9 months. The Flyers will be heading to the Mile High city on December 19th to start a 5 game road trip. If Colorado does make the jump back into playoff contention that I expect them to, then this game is deep enough into the season for us to be able to judge how good the Flyers are. To compete, the Avs have to be fast, so we we can keep or even set the pace of the game, that’s a good sign. Too bad they don’t have a Claude Lemieux anymore, to add a few fireworks to the game.
