I love the Flyers, and no other team. I want us to win a Cup, and there is no other team that I accept as an alternative. There are 29 other fanbases that feel the same way about their own club. We all have one goal, and we all have an effect on one another. Since our Fansided Network is doing a 30 day preview to get ready for the 2011-12 season, I’ll be looking at how much of a threat each team is to our own Cup hopes. Today, we have the Florida Panthers.
The Panthers have done a ton of retooling in the offseason. But part of it is because they needed to reach the cap floor. So whereas they might have been better of getting cheaper players with some good upside, they instaed had to sign some free agents. And there’s not one name there that really excites anyone in the least. Everyone they signed is a 2nd or 3rd liner. They replaced Tomas Vokoun with Jose Theodore. It’s a whole new breed of Panthers, sure to hold onto the franchises traditional losing ways. They’re still waiting around for David Booth to become something special. This team might be better, but in reality, not that much. They still need a lot of things to go their way if they want to climb out of the basement.
From their perspective, the Panthers always looked forward to a meeting with the Flyers because of their hatred for Mike Richards thanks to the Booth hit. But from our end of it, we didn’t care too much about playing them. Generally, we look at it as an opportunity for 2 easy points. Four times we play this season (November 13, January 24, March 8 and 20), and all four games I expect nothing short of a win. Yes, they won’t be as easy to play against. And there was that game where they caught us napping right before the holiday break last season and crushed us 5-0. But they don’t have such a luxury in the schedule to help them this year, and they have seriously downgraded in net. If we’re not running over them this season, then you know all of the changes in our lineup have gone to shit.
