Foe: Ottawa Senators

I love the Flyers, and no other team. I want us to win a Cup, and there is no other team that I accept as an alternative. There are 29 other fanbases that feel the same way about their own club. We all have one goal, and we all have an effect on one another. Since our Fansided Network is doing a 30 day preview to get ready for the 2011-12 season, I’ll be looking at how much of a threat each team is to our own Cup hopes. Today, we have the Ottawa Senators.

The only notable guy that the Sens acquired was Nikita Filatov. Allow that to sink in for a minute. A team that is a complete joke, acquired a half decent offensive player, while focusing mainly on developing draft picks. Meanwhile, they did absolutely nothing to address their horrendous goaltending situation. Spezza is still special, while Alfredsson is on a serious decline.  Erik Karlsson was a pleasant surprise on defense, while Sergei Gonchar was hurt and didn’t produce.  Injuries can be blamed a little bit for their crappy 2010-11 season. But lack of talent is their biggest issues. This season, things aren’t looking any better.

The Flyers will catch them on October 20, and should secure an easy victory. But we all know that we’re looking forward to their home and home on January 7-8. If you’re asking why, then you just need to look back at recent history. For whatever reason, things get chippy between these clubs, and sparks fly. And by sparks, I mean gloves and sticks (somebody hit somebody!). And that leads to YouTube history! When we see them for the final time on March 31, it should be 2 points in our back pocket, and dagger in the heart of someone else on the playoff brink. I really don’t know what a Sens fan has to look forward to this season, aside from some emerging young star, or a few good jokes from Down Goes Brown.

    Hey buddy.

Do some research before you post out your ass. The Senators acquired Craig Anderson before the trade deadline last year. He played a little more than 20 games for the SENS and had a 2.09 GAA while doing it. He is a true number one Goaltender who can single handedly steal gams for his team. His career numbers are more than comparible to Bryzgalov. Not to mention they have a 20 year old rookie goalie sensation in Bingamton, who won the memorial cup MVP this past season while leading his team to the championship. As for the “No Talent”, Ottawa walked away from the draft this year, effectively with 4 first round picks. All of them forwards. There prospect rankings jumped from 16th to 4th in the NHL. In the 3 previous drafts, they were all first round defencemen. Karlsson, Jared Cowen and a trade last year to acquire David Runblad, who is projected as a heavy contender to win the Calder Trophy seasons end. Will they make the playoff’s? No. Will they finish in the basement? maybe, but be assured of one thing. This team is not to be taken lightly. They are a team that will be far better tomorrow, but are gonna be far from a joke today.

@MikeMyles Rly, you’re giving me Craig Anderson as a top notch goalie? He’ll be an upgrade, that’s about it. As for all of their prospects and their bright future: that’s not the purpose of this preview. This preview is regarding this upcoming season. This series of previews is to identify how other teams stand in the way of the Flyers winning the Cup. So when you say, “Will they make the playoff’s? No. Will they finish in the basement? maybe…”, then you’re agreeing with what I said.

Sure I agree with you, but I don’t agree that they have “A lack of talent” or that they are a “Joke”. As for Craig Anderson, look up his numbers. Very similar to Bryzgalov. A little more than an upgrade I would say.

@MikeMyles The “lack of talent” refers to the guys most likely to play this season, not down the road. I could be wrong, somebody may step up this season. But they don’t have a ton of proven NHL talent…yet. It’s hard to comp the two b/c Anderson played over 40 games once in his career, and his numbers were nothing special. Meanwhile, Bryz has had much, much better numbers and results the last 3 years as a starter. Anderson has moved around b/c he’s nvr proven himself. Bryz left Anaheim b/c he deserved to start but they were already set in net. He left Phoenix b/c he wanted to win more.
