The last time we saw the Boston Bruins was when they used us as a stepping stone en route to winning the Stanley Cup. Now, we get to be there as they raise the banner to kick off the NHL season. Half of the guys wearing Orange and Black will relive some painful memories, while the other half will just want the ceremony to end so they can start a new chapter for their new team. But for the entire Flyers organization, it will be the 2nd year in a row to witness first hand the results of a full season of hard work, capped off with a championship.
There’s a ton to look forward to in this game. Aside from chemistry, defense, and a ton of other stuff, the biggest thing is that HOCKEY IS FINALLY BACK! Let’s save the analysis of various things for a few games into the season. None of the stats from preseason will matter. Sure, Jagr looks like a 60 goal scorer after those meaningless games. Realistically, 25 will be great for him this year. Bryzgaov looked shaky early on, and started coming around. We’ll see how sharp he is when he’s got a full team defense in front of him. But give it a few games to come together. For the month of October, don’t worry too much about these things. Let Laviolette worry about all of the little things. If we’re looking ok, just sit back and enjoy.
Enjoy the hitting, the skating, the scoring. Take some time to learn who every new player is. And remember who the guys are that are coming back. Even though Boston is the defending champs, they’ve had a shorter summer. That means they’ll have to get adjusted to a new season as well. So in this game, let’s see how well the Flyers match up. Can we skate with them? can we bang bodies with them? When push comes to shove, will we back down like we did last spring? It’s the first game of the season. Don’t judge this team based on what happens. There are a ton of question marks heading into this season. Game 1 out of 82 will probably not answer any of them.
Just remember, on Thursday night, from 7:00-9:30ish, please refrain from the following: drinking Sam Adams beer, eating New England clam chowder, wearing Harvard hoodies. Even though the Flyers are just getting started, the fans need to remember that we hate those damn Bruins.
