…they had some scoring touch. They had plenty of scoring chances, but Jonathan Quick turned everything aside. But there were a few moments of chaos, with the puck bouncing around, players scrambling out of position, and the goalie down. Unfortunately, nobody could get a hold of it to finish the play. On one rush, Hartnell, who has been very invisible this season, threaded the needle across the goal mouth to Talbot. With a gaping net smiling at him, Talbot didn’t even make contact, whiffing on the shot. He might have been surprised that the puck got through so many sticks and skates, but that’s why you keep your stick on the ice.
That’s how Danny Briere was able to open the scoring on an early powerplay. Sooooo many wasted chances that could have been in the back of the net. Defense was pretty lock tight, except on the 2nd Williams goal. He got way to much time and space to carry the puck in front for a shot and rebound. Somebody has to put a body on him faster. Matt Carle was clutch in answering back with the tying goal less than a minute later. I still can’t believe how many chances we missed out on though. We coulda had a nice, comfortable lead.
Of course, I can’t end this without mentioning Mike Richards. He got the cheers, ovations and acknowledgement that he deserved. He got booed when he touched the puck, but that wasn’t mean spirited. He had a few chances to score, a few nice passes. He did a good job on the PK. And of course, he ended the game with the slap-pass that we’ve seen so often. Usually he finds a seem across the ice to someone hanging out for a back door tip, this time he went near side. Just a case of a smart player making a smart play. And this marks the 2nd time that the Kopitar-Richards-Johnson connection has given the Kings an OT win. The trio combined to secure 2 points against the Ragners on opening day.
Overall it was a good, exciting game. A loss is a loss, but we can still add a point to the standings. It’s just a shame we couldn’t bank another one due to a few unlucky bounces. Anyway, tomorrow we try to patch things up and put a hurtin’ on Ottawa.
