I just can’t get through to you
Despite all the ways
I try or any of the things I do
Maybe I’d be better off talkin to a wall
Cause you ain’t making any sense at all

It’s a malfunction…!

Cro-Mags — Malfunction (abridged version)

I felt like using that quote because after these last few days, it just seems to fit.  Malfunctioning seems to be a fitting word for the Flyers right now.  Despite some success on the newly created Scott Hartnell-Claude Giroux- Jaromir Jagr line, as well as the line of James vanRiemsdyk-Danny Briere-Wayne Simmonds starting to click tonight, this team has been downright awful.  Part of me refuses to believe that the absence of Chris Pronger has made the team look this badly, but it’s definitely noticeable.    The highly touted defense, at least on paper, that the Flyers have seems unfathomably inept right now.  Matt Walker has been nothing short of a disaster, and Andreas Lilja has shown a propensity for taking ill-timed penalties.  If Matt Walker hasn’t been put on the first plane, train or automobile to Glens Falls, NY, well then I really don’t know what to think anymore.

Given the time frame of 2-3 weeks for Chris Pronger to be out of the line up, the top four d-men of Kimmo Timonen, Matt Carle, Andrej Meszaros and Brayden Coburn HAVE to be better.  To pin the defensive lapse on their shoulders alone would be unfair, as the team as a whole has played terribly in front of their netminders.  This lackluster play is clearly taking its toll on Ilya Bryzgalov and Sergei Bobrovsky.  They have each given up four or more goals in four of their last five outings combined.  For a team that is as good as the Flyers are supposed to be, this is inexcusable.   Not to be “that guy,” but something has to give here.  Whether or not there will be a shake up to the roster or coaching staff is unknown, and I won’t begin to speculate who, what or when.  It just needs to be said when your starting prized goalie is giving interviews like the one below, there’s something that needs to change.
