Flyers Bonding Trips Yields A Pair Of Wins

With the Flyers in Florida for a few days, the team set up a bonding experience.  The guys did various watersports and other activities together. It was a good way for them to get to know each other a bit better. After all that sunshine and relaxation, it was time to get back to work. And that meant a few games against teams in the Southeast. I love the Southeast Division. They’re always good for building up a few points. Sure, Washington and Tampa aren’t easy, but the rest of the teams don’t put up much fight. On Sunday, the surprising Florida Panthers didn’t put up much of a fight. And last night, the Carolina Hurricanes didn’t fare much better either.

Historically, this is a team we should usually beat.  But so far this season, the Panthers have actually been pretty decent. Going into this game, I wasn’t sure things would be that easy. And if you look at the final 3-2 score, you would think it was tight game. That wasn’t the case, however. The Flyers didn’t completely dominate things and make it look easy. For the most part, they controlled things and didn’t really give Florida anything. Bryzgalov gave up one bad goal, and that was pretty much it. The Panthers haven’t been great defensively, and the Flyers found seams rather easily. That’s what lead to the Coburn goal and the Read breakaway that gave him a penalty shot.

Flyers fans deserve a ton of credit for how well they travel. Watch the replay again and pay attention to how loud the crowd gets after we score.  This isn’t some big game against a big rival. This is Game 16 of 82 against a “whatever” opponent. So nice job by everyone who traveled down to watch the game.

This was the Claude Giroux show. He was just showing off all night long. His first goal demonstrated his speed and vision, while his second demonstrated his hands. And he skated with relative ease through the offensive zone and had a bunch of other chances.  Jagr tried to set him up for a hat trick a few times. The Flyers were a bit sloppy though. Twice they gave away shitty passes at the blue line which directly lead to Carolina goals (1 via a shorthanded penalty shot). Also, Matt Read’s goal to give us a cushion makes me like this kid more and more.  Out off our 500 rookies this season, he’s the most fun to watch by far.

In the end, the Flyers ended their mini road trip with 5 out of a possible 6 points. The only blemish was that snoozefest against Tampa last week. Now we get a few days off before hosting Phoenix on Thursday.
