The Flyers organization has just announced a ladies only event for fans called “hockey in heels.” As a woman hockey fan, I think it’s a good idea to do an event like this. (Even if the title might be a bit sexist, but that’s another blog entirely). Essentially the Flyers organization is trying to bring together the female fans of the team for an event that will show hands on hockey techniques, a breakdown of the x’s and o’s, a tour of the locker room, etc. A few of the Flyers wives will be in attendance including a few of the female media personalities.
Let’s face it, hockey and other sports tend to be male dominated in terms of fans and atmosphere, especially since most professional leagues are men only. Women’s hockey is in the olympics and is ever present in collegiate sports, so Canada just needs to start up the professional women’s league already. In any case, there are a lot of women hockey fans, but sometimes I think we feel alienated from the rowdy men in the arena beside us.
So bringing together the female fans in this way, might actually do some good. I predict that there will probably be huge fans that understand the game in attendance, and women who just want to understand what their signifacant others are babbling about when they watch games. I approve, just in the chance that starts to bring more fans to the Flyers.
