Okay Bryzgalov, I'm Listening

Okay, so I’m a Flyers fan that is pretty critical of goaltender Bryzgalov. I know I shouldn’t be, because I’m the first to defend the goaltenders when other fans are trying to make them the scapegoats for losing. Maybe I’m still bitter over the Richards & Carter trades or the fact that the Flyers organization gave Bryz way too much money. I do think Bryzgalov is a decent goaltender, but maybe not for upwards of $51 million split between nearly a decade. But that is not my point tonight, my point is at times I think Bryzgalov shines but this is muted when the flyers strategies on the ice flatter and the team loses. This would be one of those times where the goaltender gets blamed for a lost, which if you’re a pretty die hard flyers fan, this tends to be a lot. It’s a tough city to be a goaltender in.

In the past two games; however Bryz has really shown his skills. Again he’s not a bad goalie, he just has his moments, and although we lost to the Oilers last Thursday he only let in 2 shots out of 35, which is a huge number of shots to keep out of the net. I’ve made my peace about the defense issue, so I won’t mention that, but even despite this loss Bryz came out on top. And then he did it again last Saturday night in Calgary with a shootout overtime victory.  The game was a rough start for Bryz with a 2-0 lead for Calgary early on, but the Flyers managed to pull through and bring the game into a second overtime period, with the help of their goaltender.  Bryz blocked even more shots in this game by only letting 4 out of an impressive 45 go in.

The shootout period is always a difficult one for the Flyers, and it has seemed to be one of the things that their goaltender struggles with the most. Bryz is now starting to get out of his funk over this and pull through during these heated periods. On Saturday he was able to help the Flyers overcome the Flames in a shut out win, which was a much needed victory for the Flyers who have been gradually slipping down in the rankings.

I only hope Bryz continues on this path and shows the fans what he is capable of more, like he has done in the past two games.
