Fansided Mock Draft: Philadelphia Flyers Select...

Defenseman from the Windsor Spitfires, Nick Ebert. Anyone who follows prospects knows a ton more than me and is probably scoffing at this pick. Here’s a guy who was ranked top 5, and has now nearly fallen out of the top 100. Still, I have my reasons:

The Need
Keeping pucks out of our net. It take more than the 6 blueliners to play defense. However, I feel like that might be our biggest need coming up. Bryz is locked up, and we’ve got a slew of young forwards. However, it looks like our D is need in need of some major renovations. Kimmo Timonen is losing a step every year. We don’t know if Chris Pronger will ever play again, or at what level he will be if he comes back. Matt Carle’s future is to be determined. We have a few young guys, but we need reinforcements.

The Fit
Nick Ebert
is not a large man, at 5’11”. But the way his game is described fits exactly what we need. He’s physical, he has high IQ, and he chips in on offense. One dimensional players at every position are becoming more and more rare. They are a flash in the pan before the league figures them out and breaks them. Ebert might have the necessary tools to have a lasting career.  His rankings have dropped because a perceived lack of effort and  his penchant for taking shortcuts due to his athletic ability. I say he needs a bigger challenge. He has a reputation for excelling at every level. Maybe he needs a harder push. Why not give a guy with this much talent a chance?
