Conspiracy Theory: Pronger Is Healthy

This past season, the Flyers were embarrassing on defense. There are tons of factors that contributed to this, not just Mr. Universe. One of the main missing pieces was Chris Pronger when he went down with his concussion. However, a series of moves, or lack thereof, have me thinking that he’s closer to returning than the front office is letting on.

Ever since getting hurt, all we have heard about Chris is that he has good days and bad days. He’s not close to coming back, and his mood around the house sucks. It might be the end, we’ve been told. He might never play again. There hasn’t been any progress that indicates any sort of comeback can happen at anytime. That sums up pretty much all of the news that we’ve heard.

So when you lose your best defenseman, your captain, one of your best players and there’s no sign that he will ever play again, why do you not do anything. Luke Schenn and Bruno Gervais are the defensive cavalry that we need? Seriously? We let Jaromir Jagr chase $’s in Dallas, and shipped JVR to Toronto for Schenn. Both guys contributed to the offense. So with their spots open, I would be ok if we added some sick defensive forward. Ruslan Fedotenko?

I’m not knocking these three acquisitions. Except maybe Gervais, he blows. None of them are game changers. They’re all support pieces. Support pieces don’t replace studs. I’m not saying it’s easy to replace a future Hall of Fame defenseman on a whim. But I’m not looking for a replacement, I’m looking for something more significant than the guys we signed.

These kind of weak ass moves are not what we usually see from GM Paul Holmgren. Every year he makes a big bold move with big name players.  Why is he quiet when we have such a glaring need? Because I believe Prongs is much healthier than the team is letting on. With a healthy #20 on the ice, everything changes. Your depth on D goes from “eh” to “yeah”. He adds a rocket to the point. He adds a brilliant breakout pass. He adds some meanness and toughness and some @$$holeness. And come October, he might be back.
