While his time in Philadelphia was short, the Flyers have a special place in the heart of Jaromir Jagr.
In an interview with Pavel Lysenkov of Russia’s SovSport, translated in English by Yahoo! Sports’ Dmitry Chesnokov, Jagr had nothing but nice things to say about the Flyers organization.
I have never seen a team like the Flyers. Everyone keeps together. Players understand the coach immediately. The year was such that there was nothing to complain about. We played some wonderful hockey. Just remember the series against Pittsburgh in the first round.
So, if he enjoyed his time so much, why did he decide to sign a one-year deal with the Dallas Stars?
The Flyers were heavily involved in pursuing highly coveted free agents Zach Parise and Ryan Suter. General manager Paul Holmgren informed Jagr to wait to see if the Flyers could land a big name in the offseason. However, Jagr loves the game so much, that waiting wasn’t really an option for him.
I really liked it in Philadelphia, I wanted to stay there. But the Flyers started hunting for the big players on the market – Zach Parise, Ryan Suter. They needed some money under the cap and they said ‘Wait a little, Jaromir…’ And I didn’t want to wait. This is when Dallas came through.
Jaromir Jagr is a class act. Everything he says about the Flyers comes from his heart. The fans loved having a guy like Jagr in the Orange and Black, but especially the players. Young guys like Claude Giroux and fellow Czech Jakub Voracek were sponges last season, absorbing all that the future hall-of-famer taught them.
I wish Jagr nothing but the best in Dallas, as he finishes his illustrious career.
