Andrej Meszaros Tears Achilles, Out Indefinitely; What's Next?

The Flyers defense truly has a massive hole now. Flyers writer Anthony SanFillipo reports that Andrej Meszaros tore his achilles while training in Slovakia. He will be out indefinitely. According to webMD, the tendon must be sewed back together during surgery. Meszaros will most likely be in a boot for 6-12 weeks. However, recovery time could take upwards of 6 months.

Philadelphia must plan to be without Mesz for the long haul, and that includes going out and getting a big name replacement. Once the Czech native is place on Long Term Injured Reserve, the Flyers would now have $8.9 million in relief, and $3.5 million in cap space. The Flyers would not be able to compete with Luke Schenn, Braydon Coburn, Nicklas Grosmann, Kimmo Timonen, Bruno Gervais and Erik Gustafsson.

In all likelihood, the Flyers would not be able to complete a trade for a top Defenseman. Teams understand the Flyers would be in a position of weakness in trade negotiations, and would continue to press for Sean Couturier and Brayden Schenn.

The best Unrestricted Free Agent Defenseman remaining on the market is St. Louis’s Carlo Colaiacovo. In 64 games last year, Colaiacovo scored 2 goals and 17 assists and a goal differential of 7. The 29 year is old is a solid Defenseman, but really would not be worth the move. Even as a big-bodied player, Colaiacovo is not a big hitter, and he certainly could not pick up on the Offensive duties that Meszaros is leaving behind.

Paul Holmgren will most likely have to go after another Restricted Free Agent to get their man, and PK Subban would be a fantastic replacement. In 81 games last year, the 23 year old Subban had 7 goals and 29 goals and a goal differential of 9. Subban would be a perfect fit in Philadelphia, as he could play a a strong role on the Offensive end, as well as impose his will on opponents. Montreal has offered PK a 2 year deal worth $5.5 million, but his camp has made it clear that they are not happy with that deal. Philadelphia certainly could swoop in, overpay, and get a top guy going forward.
