Now I know that everyone is really frustrated about the lockout, I for one am really sick of blogging about “talks”, to the point that I can’t even blog anymore, but today let’s forget about that because it’s “Spirit Day.”
You don’t know what spirit day is? Well it’s a campaign for equality that is run by GLAAD and the You Can Play Project is supporting it today. The You Can Play Project is a campaign founded by the Burke family that has been running since the untimely death of Brendan Burke, one of the first openly gay hockey players. The campaign is essentially a non-political campaign to get rid of homophobia and its language in sports. It’s basically just trying to bring respect back to sports, not just hockey, but all sports, to just say hey who cares about your personal life, let’s win this game. It’s a pretty cool concept and something that affects not only the Philadelphia Flyers but all teams in the NHL and various collegiate and minor leagues.
So today all of the NHL teams are going purple on Twitter to support Spirit Day and equality, and you should too! The Flyers are among these teams, but are not the only ones. Wear purple today to show your support for equality in sports, because honestly who cares what your sexual orientation is, what we Philly fans care about is bringing the Stanley Cup back to the city.
