Read comes up high

Jan 26, 2013; Sunrise, FL, USA; Philadelphia Flyers left wing Tye McGinn (15) celebrates his goal with left wing Ruslan Fedotenko (26) in a game against the Florida Panthers in the first period at the BB

During the summer I was posting up a lot of player profiles, specifically on the Flyers rookies. Flyers right wing Matt Read happened to be one of them. Even then I was pretty impressed with Read’s playing last season. I was also confused as to why he was so underrated by the media.

Read led the rookies in points last season, but attention went mostly to younger rookies Sean Couturier and Brayden Schenn. Read is an older rookie and is an un-drafted player, so that may be why. After last night’s game in Florida against the Florida Panthers, a lot of people are going to be paying more attention to Read.

Last night the Flyers crushed the Florida Panthers 7-1. The Panther have good potential in rookie Jonathan Huberdeau, but their goalie Jose Theodore needs a lot of work, because the Flyers dangled, sniped and celly-ed way too much in front of his net last night. Especially Read who came up high in last night’s game by scoring a hat trick. It was his first career hat trick.

Read wasn’t the only Flyers to get some first career goals in either. Tye McGinn having been called up from the Phantoms while Zac Rinaldo recovers from a lower body injury, logged his first NHL career goal. Fans also are going to start paying attention to McGinn. He doesn’t back down from a fight as we saw in the flyers game against the Rangers and he can score some sick goals. That’s something we like in Philadelphia.

Among the other Flyers goal scorers last night were Wayne Simmonds, Luke Schenn (his first as a flyer) and Ruslan Fedotenko. Still you have to hand it to Read for just having a stellar game last night. I see more of this coming out of him this season and even next season. He is definitely a player to keep your eye on.

This game was a big win for the Flyers, but it was against the Panthers who are not ranked that great. The Flyers play the Lightning tonight, so they definitely need to keep the momentum going if they want to move up in the rankings and get in the playoffs this season.
