Tough Break for Philly Fans

It’s really tough to be a Philadelphia Flyers fan right now. Actually, it’s tough to be a Philadelphia sports fan in general. Thursday night proved that, when the Flyers, the Phillies, and the Sixers all lost their games. Yup, that happened.

So it was quite a losing trifecta last night, and no one was happy.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my team and I will always bleed black and orange, but this has been a really tough season for the Flyers. So much so that I’ve been having a hard time just blogging about the season. The Flyers (12-15-1) are just really terrible. Right now they’re 11th in the Eastern Conference and are on the verge of being shut out of the playoffs this year. The last time they haven’t made the playoffs was in the 2005-2006 season, which was right after an NHL lockout.

Is it the lockout that is causing the Flyers to suck so much? Maybe, I mean it has been a weird season, especially when you consider that the Toronto Maple Leafs are 6th in the Eastern Conference. Yes, the Maple Leafs. I want to just think it’s because they have James Van Riemsdyk, but that’s probably not entirely true.

The other obvious reasons why the Flyers aren’t doing well is defense. Mainly, they have none. The defense is pretty bland this year, and the Flyers continue to miss Chris Pronger‘s aggression on the blueline. I hate that people continue to blame goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov for every loss, because he needs to have solid D-men helping him in front, and he’s not getting that. The defense being bad isn’t a new thing, because I’m pretty sure the Flyers have had poor defense since before I was born.

The other problem with the Flyers this year is that they have really solid first and second lines, but once you can’t past the first two, they have trouble scoring.  Sean Couturier is also flopping and it could be because he can’t flourish on the 4th line.

Honestly the only good thing about this team is Jakub Voracek. It’s a shame that he’s breaking out this season while the rest of the team just sits back and watches. I love what he’s doing, but he can’t carry this team to a playoff run.
