According to Adrian Dater of the Denver Post, there may be some talks between the Avalanche and Flyers on swapping some players. Rumor has it that the Avalanche are using John Mitchell as trade-bait for the Flyers who are now down to 12 forwards after waiving Hall.
The Avalanche are looking for some help on the defensive side of the puck. Meszaros has been tossed around as a name that could possibly be a piece in the trade which would also save the Flyers almost $3m in cap space.
The issue that comes up is that Mitchell is a natural center and the Flyers are not bereft in that commodity to the point that they’ve had to move some players to the wing. If the deal does happen, expect Mitchell to spend his next few seasons as a Phantom and come up when injuries happen.
I don’t think that the Flyers need anymore depth at forward and getting rid of a dependable, if overpaid, defenseman would be a bad idea especially for someone who has been a lifetime AHL player up to this point.
