Jake’s Trick in Pittsburgh
On the night of February 20, 2013 I was at the Buffalo Wild Wings in Lynchburg, Virgnina (the city where I go to college). I was sitting with a friend of mine who is from Philadelphia and two brothers from Pittsburgh. The Flyers were playing a high profile rivalry game on NBC Sports Network against the Penguins in Pittsburgh. As usual against the Penguins, the Flyers went down 2-0 and Peter Laviolette called a timeout. The Flyers came storming back to win the game. 6-5.
Jakub Voracek did not tally a goal in the game until the final 10 seconds of the second period. However, he quickly scored a second goal only 18 seconds into the third. With only 2:03 remaining in the game, the Penguins tied the score at five. Not to be outdone, Voracek completed his hat trick in with only 1:31 remaining in regulation. It was not just the fact that Voracek earned a hat trick against the Penguins that made this moment great. The way in which the final goal was scored made the ending even more memorable. Voracek shot the puck from behind the Pittsburgh net, bouncing the puck off of the back of Pittsburgh goaltender Thomas Vokoun. You can watch the goal here.
