Philadelphia Flyers In Sochi: Meszaros Vs Slovenia

With a start time of 3:00am and match-up of Slovakia vs Slovenia, Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Andrej Meszaros flew under the radar today. Although the talk of the day will surely be the United States’ victory over Russia, the upset of Slovenia over Slovakia by a score of 3-1 is a big deal.

There were no goals scored in the first 40 minutes of the game. Both goalies had a shutout going into the third, although Slovenia looked like the better team. Finally, with 16:37 remaining in regulation and 13 seconds left on a Slovenia power play, Rok Ticar put the Slovenians up 1-0. About five and half minutes later the Slovenian captain, Tomaz Razingar, gave them a two goal lead. He picked up a rebound that Zdeno Chara failed to clear. Any hope of a Slovakian comeback was put to rest only 23 seconds later when Anze Kopitar made an incredibly patient play to give the Slovenians a 3-0 lead. As a whole, Kopitar played an impressive game. The Slovakians scored a goal with 18 seconds left, but by then it was too little too late.

Meszaros played for 20:17 and looked solid. He was fourth on the defense and sixth on the team in total ice time and registered two shots on goal. During his first shift he was able to lead a rush, but lost an edge before he could make a play. No goals were scored on Meszaros’ watch and he was paired for most of the game with Ivan Baranka. Slovakia will play Russia tomorrow at 7:30am and the game will be televised on USA Network.
