Philadelphia Flyers, San Jose Sharks Preview

After 18 days, the Philadelphia Flyers are back in action Thursday night to face the San Jose Sharks.

The orange and black’s trek toward the playoffs will not be an easy one. They are third in the Metropolitan Division with 66 points, only one point behind the New York Rangers for second place, but there are four additional teams who are all within five points of the Flyers.

During the month of March, the Flyers will play seven divisional games. Aside from divisional matchups, the Flyers will play some of the toughest teams in the National Hockey League, including the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins and Los Angeles Kings.

The Flyers get can off to a good start with a win against the San Jose Sharks. Claude Giroux had three points in the Flyers’ 5-2 comeback win over the Sharks on Feb. 3 in what may have been the Flyers’ best game of the season.

San Jose (37-16-6, 80 points) holds a comfortable ten-point lead in the Pacific Division. The Sharks have been dominating at home, losing only four games in regulation, but have not found that same success on the road where they are 15-12-3. This could bode well for Flyers (30-23-6, 66 points) who have been almost unbeatable at the Wells Fargo Center. Since Nov. 9, the team has gone 14-3-1 in South Philadelphia.

Kimmo Timonen will not play tonight. Head coach Craig Berube said Timonen’s night off is because ‘he has no legs.’ It is most likely fatigue from the Olympics and nothing to be concerned about.

Berube has called Steve Mason to the crease. Mason is 23-14-5 with a 2.49 goals against average and a .918 save percentage.
