Well the playoffs are here for the Philadelphia Flyers. At certain points this season even the notion of the Flyers making it would seem somewhat laughable. Well…they held together and pulled themselves out of a pretty deep early season hole. Which leads some to speculate how good, in fact, is this team. Are they a one series and done team? Do they even belong in the playoffs to begin with? Will they make a deep run in the playoffs? Can they win it all? Who are the 2014 Flyers?
Truth is; no one still knows yet. The Flyers had stretches were they looked like they could beat anyone and then turn around the next few nights flat against lesser opponents. There were games that made us as fans stand up and be proud of this team for their great comebacks. At times we could finally see a true commitment to team defense and the wins that would follow. We could see a team that has seven players score twenty or more goals. We could see the great goaltending that has been absent from this franchise for far too long. We could see the potential.
Then there were times where we would too often see ugly turnovers, undisciplined penalties, poor positioning, lack of skating, and weak goals. Which leads back to one of the original questions. Who are the 2014 Flyers?
I get asked from some about my thoughts on the Flyers chances this year and my and answer is this. I don’t know. I guess the best way to put that answer in a better perspective is that it would not surprise me to see them bow out in the first round. It also would not surprise me to see them win it all. The talent is there. They just need to put it together for sixteen more wins. They have it in them to go either way.
Playoff time is here so all of us fans will get our answer soon enough. I truly hope the 2014 Flyers are Stanley Cup Champions…we’ve waited long enough.
