Philadelphia Flyers Trade Scott Hartnell For RJ Umberger

The Philadelphia Flyers announced on Monday afternoon that they have traded Scott Hartnell to the Columbus Blue Jackets for RJ Umberger and a 2015 4th round draft choice. By all accounts, this move is a head-scratcher.

Both players are 32 years old. Hartnell has five years left on a deal paying him $4.75M annually while Umberger has three years left on a deal paying him $4.6M annually, so the cap savings are negligible.

Hartnell scored 20 goals and had 32 assists last season while Umberger had 18 goals and 16 assists through 74 games. The Flyers seem to have given up the more productive player.

There are a few minor pros to this deal. The Flyers get an extra pick in next years draft (they are already without a 2nd and 3rd rounder), Umberger has speed, he can help the bottom six, and his contract is up before Hartnell’s.

There is also speculation that this is the first of a slew of moves by Philadelphia. We’ll keep you posted.

For now, here is a poll question:

Who wins the Hartnell/Umberger Swap?
