Flyers Draft Options: 1st-Round Pick from Tampa Bay

More from Draft

Most of the Flyers draft discussions have been geared towards the 7th overall pick and rightfully so.  The pick could have huge ramifications on the future of the franchise, either for the good or bad.  However, the second first-round pick the Flyers received from the Tampa Bay Lightning is also very important for the future of the Flyers. By the end of Tampa’s game tonight we will have a better idea of where that pick will be.

As of now the pick could be anywhere from 27th to 30th.  This puts Flyer fans in a difficult situation, rooting for the New York Rangers tonight.  While my level of hate for the Rangers is at a level not matched by many, it does benefit the Flyers if the blue shirts win tonight.  With that being said, let’s take a look at some possible options for the Flyers second first-round pick.  Keep in mind a lot depends on what type of player the Flyers select with the 7th pick and what players are available.

Oliver Kylington: Defenseman

Kylington is considered as possibly the best skating defenseman in the draft. His skating ability could have made him a mid-first-round pick, but an injury that prevented him from competing in the World Junior Championship for Sweden will likely make him fall to the bottom of the first round.  Kylington is not very big at 6’ 0” 180 lbs, but he wins with his quickness and great hockey sense.

NHL Director of European Scouting Goran Stubb stated to NHL.com. “He’s an excellent, smooth skater. He’s an offensive defenceman with excellent vision and playmaking skills. He has very good eye-to-hand coordination, and is dangerous on the power play. He has all the tools needed and is a finesse-type player.”  If the Flyers select Mathew Barzal or Lawson Crouse at the top of the first round, Kylington would definitely be a great option for the Flyers.

Brock Boeser: Right Wing

Boeser is currently committed to the University of North Dakota in 2015-16, so new coach Dave Hakstol should have a lot of familiarity from recruiting Boeser.  Boeser is quite simply a goal scorer.  He has a quick accurate shot and seems to have a natural ability to find the back of the net. His play away from the puck and on the boards are concerning to some; but Boeser has a ton of offensive upside.

If the Flyers select Ivan Provorov or another defenseman with the 7th pick, Boeser could be an intriguing option at the bottom of the first round.

Jordan Greenway: Left Wing

Greenway is an absolute monster of a man at 6’5” and 225 lbs.  He has surprisingly quick feet for someone at his size along with good skills.  With his size and skill, Greenway has unbelievable potential; but consistency and constant effort are issues.  Scouts say that he would be a possible top ten pick if his play was consistent.  If the Flyers have someone that can light a fire under Greenway, he would be well worth a late first round selection.
