The Philadelphia Flyers have won back to back games for the first time since January 25th and 26th.

First Period

God Bless America got things going on Thursday night in Philadelphia on Law Enforcement Appreciation Night.

Shayne Gostisbehere was all over the ice in the first, setting up Brayden Schenn for a glorious opportunity to open the scoring. Schenn missed a wide open cage due to being hooked, leading to a 5-3 man advantage.

Philadelphia couldn’t find a goal on three first period power plays, while shutting down both of Florida’s power plays.

Second Period

Goaltender James Riemer entered the Panthers net to start the second due to a Robert Luongo lower body injury that occurred in the first period on Philadelphia’s 5-3 man advantage.

Claude Giroux with a horrendous turnover on the power-play led to an Aaron Ekblad shorthand strike.

Flyers were still unable to find the back of the net in the second period. Florida with all the momentum in the second frame put all kinds of pressure on Steve Mason, who stood his ground.

Third Period

The Flyers outshot Florida in 18-8 in third period, pushing late to tie. Valtteri Filppula was rewarded, going hard to the net, putting in a Brayden Schenn pass, forcing  overtime.  Filppula impressed in his home debut, winning 57% of his draws while playing 15:12 minutes, gaining the game’s third star.

The Flyers new-look second line of Schenn, Fippula and Voracek continually attacked generating  chances in Florida’s zone.

Overtime

3v3 overtime wouldn’t solve  the 1-1 deadlock, sending this game into a shootout. Jordan Weal got things going, scoring on his first career shootout attempt.  Claude Giroux was denied, looking five hole. Jake Voracek would finish off his attempt,  beating James Riemer between the pads.  Steve Mason stopped 2/3 Panthers on route to his second straight win.

The Philadelphia Flyers out shot the Florida Panthers 49-40.  Steve Mason shut the door, turning away 39 shots, leading to his second win in as many games, and posting .975 SV% tonight. He allowed just one goal in his last seven periods of play. (Did Ron Hextall extend the wrong goalie?)
