An Open Letter

AUTHOR: | IN: Flyers, NHL | COMMENTS: None Yet

Dear Mr. Snider, Mr. Holmgren and staff, I understand that these last 8 months or so have been rough.  A disappointing playoff run capped off by an embarrassing sweep by the rival Boston Bruins, coupled with subpar goaltending led to a lot of changes.  I applaud your direct approach to addressing what you thought our beloved Philadelphia Flyers needed to correct.  We stood by during that disastrous season when the team was so bad we even lost the draft lottery.  despite all our complaints we have stuck by your decisions to trade away a beloved captain and a top goal [...]

Bryzgalov’s Turnaround & Offensive Firepower Fuel Flyers

AUTHOR: | IN: Flyers, NHL | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

This young Flyers team just endured their first road trip of this season and the results were impressive. After a 2-1 loss in Tampa Bay that produced one of the most interesting situations that we will see all year. Yes of course I’m talking about the stalling tactic that head coach Peter Laviolette endorsed. Even though the two points were taken away by the Lightning in overtime, the Panthers and Hurricanes would fall to a well rested Flyers team. The players couldn’t have been complaining about the scheduling of this road trip. They played just one game last week [...]

Back to Basics

As the Philadelphia Flyers started out 4-0-1, all seemed to be right in the world.  Claude Giroux was playing out of his mind and on pace for 60+ goals.  Rookies Matt Read and Sean Couturier were looking like seasoned veterans.  Ilya Bryzgalov looked like the answer the Flyers have been looking for in goal since, well forever, and Wayne Simmonds was Wayne Training his way through the competition.  Two big wins over the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins and the Western Conference champion Vancouver Canucks gave this team all the early praise they could handle, and they did it [...]

The Iron Curtain

AUTHOR: | IN: Flyers, NHL | COMMENTS: None Yet

The following is an understatement.  The Philadelphia Flyers have had goaltending issues.  The argument can be made that not since Ron Hextall’s initial stint, or as some might argue the late Pelle Lindbergh, have the Flyers had a “true” number one netminder.  Sean Burke, John Vanbiesbrouck, Roman Cechmanek, Brian Boucher and Robert Esche are just a few of the names the Flyers have attempted to use in their attempt to acquire their third Stanley Cup.  After a disappointing playoff run in 2010-2011, the Flyers have finally done something to address their need for a number one goaltender.  However it seems [...]

Why Brayden Schenn Will Thrive With The Philadelphia Flyers

AUTHOR: | IN: Flyers, NHL | COMMENTS: None Yet

If there’s one thing the Flyers have been known for in recent years, apart from still being the Broad Street Bullies, it is their depth at the center ice position.  It is this depth that has allowed their young, talented players to get their feet wet at the NHL level without being completely thrown the wolves.  Going back to the 2005-2006 season is a nice example of how veteran leadership up front, coupled with ability that keeps opposition on edge allows the young center men to develop without facing top level, shut down defensemen, giving these young players confidence and [...]

Surviving The Hurricane

AUTHOR: | IN: Flyers, Other | COMMENTS: None Yet

With the weather turning bad this weekend, most people probably won’t want to leave their house. That leaves most people with only two things to do. If you lose power, you really have one option. Let’s just say there will be a baby boom next May if the lights do go out. But the other thing to do is obviously chow down. Health shmealth. Summer is almost over, it’s time to put on some winter weight. And if you’re like me, that means sweets. Some new bakery opened up in my neck of the woods last night, and I tried [...]

The NHL Could Use Some Rasslin’

AUTHOR: | IN: Flyers, Other | COMMENTS: None Yet

Once upon a time, I used to love wrestling. I didn’t care how fake it was. All I knew is that the storylines were intriguing, the characters were larger than life, and the action was riveting.  Even if the outcomes were predetermined, the way that we got there was always amazing to watch. These athletes did amazing things, and put their bodies through a lot of pain, just to put on a show for us. Eventually, I grew tired of the gimmicks. Too many stupid tricks to distract referees, too many repeated storylines, and too many idiotic characters pushed me away. I haven’t [...]

Fansided’s Mock Draft

AUTHOR: | IN: Flyers, NHL | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Entry Draft is approaching this weekend in Los Angeles. Of course,  as a fan, it’s fun to play armchair GM. However, the Flyers’ 1st round pick was part of the package that we sent away to get Chris Pronger. Thus, I didn’t participate in this mock. However, the rest of the bloggers did, and here are their selections and explanations: Pick Team Player Selected Player’s Position Player’s Junior Team Analysis 1. Taylor Hall Left Wing Windsor Spitfires (OHL) Forget the raging debate over whether Hall or Tyler Seguin, the prototypical playmaking centre from the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers, is the [...]
