If you think it’s really hard to be a Flyers fan right now, imagine what it’s like to be a Adirondack Phantoms fan. There’s a trickle down effect happening to the Flyers with their AHL team. If their AHL team is this bad, how do you expect the NHL team to be any better?

The Phantoms continued to show why they are in the last place of the AHL last week by splitting their two game header against the Norfolk Admirals on Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Tuesday they were successful by winning 4-1. Erik Gustaffson, Tye McGinn and Danny Syvret scored the goals for the Phantoms, with McGinn getting a second goal in the third period.

Devante Smith-Pelly was the only player on the Admirals to get past Phantoms goalie Brian Boucher. The win was a great triumphant for the Phantoms, but this late in the season it’s not really going to matter.

The next day the teams played a rematch and it looked like the Phantoms forgot what they were doing. They dropped a 3-0 shutout to the Admirals.

Smith-Pelly, Kyle Wilson and Sami Vatanen all got goals past Phantoms’ goaltender Scott Munroe, but none of the Phantoms were able to best Fredrik Andersen.

The Biggest differences between the two games was that the Phantoms were raking in the penalty minutes. It seems that every time they learn from these mistakes they keep going back to these standbys. There was also a fight in the beginning of the first period between Zack FitzGerald and Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond.

The Phantoms made a lot of mistakes but so did the Admirals. The Phantoms had 23 penalty minutes and the Admirals were behind them with 21. This was the major factor that wrecked the Phantoms chances of winning.

The Phantoms got a little bit of a break while the AHL hosted their all-star game, but they came back to win 2-5 against the Norfolk Admirals on Friday.

The Phantoms have had a pretty rough season, and with all the Flyers injuries and NHL call ups their roster has been suffering. They do still have some great talent on the ice, if only they would stop taking so many penalties. In this game, this didn’t appear to be too much of a problem, as they were able to outsmart the Admirals’ defense.

Matt “Red” Mangene got the Phantoms on the board early with a man advantage, showing why he was a good ECHL call up and why he was invited to the Flyers trial on the isle this summer.

The Phantoms didn’t hold the lead for long. In the second period they took a penalty which gave Norfolk the man advantage. Peter Holland took the shot and tied the game. The Phantoms were right behind them when Rob Bordson scored again to give the Phantoms the lead.

The back and forth continued as a few minutes later the Admirals scored again to cut the Phantoms lead. It was Norfolk’s Dan Sexon who managed to tie it up again.

That may have been the only goals scored in the second period, but not the only thing to happen. Of course it’s a Phantoms game so of course someone has to fight. Shortly after the Sexon goal Brandon Manning and Brandon Kurtz got into a fight.

They were tied at 2 going into the last period, but the Phantoms came out on top by scoring three goals in the last period and not allowing any pucks into their own net. Jason Akeson scored to break the tie, Bordson got another goal, and Shane Harper scored to seal the Phantoms win.
