Philadelphia Flyers F Chris VandeVelde Faces League Discipline

Philadelphia Flyers forward Chris VandeVelde will have a hearing with the league tomorrow regarding the elbow he delivered to Jonathan Toews

The NHL department of player safety announced today that Philadelphia Flyers forward Chris VandeVelde will have a hearing with the league tomorrow to determine if he will face any supplementary discipline for the elbow he delivered to the chin of Jonathan Toews in last night’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks.

The elbow was very out of character for VandeVelde, who generally plays a very honest game.  This will be VandeVelde’s first offense, which will lessen any fine or suspension that the league may impose.

Here’s a clip of the play:

It definitely was an ugly and unnecessary play by VandeVelde, even if he wasn’t penalized at the time.  In the case that he is suspended, Jakub Voracek may be ready to return to the lineup and take his roster spot for Saturday’s big game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Alternatively, RJ Umberger is another candidate to return to the lineup and fill VandeVelde’s depth role.
