Philadelphia Flyers General Manager Ron Hextall named Canada’s General Manager for IIHF World Championships.

One day after the Philadelphia Flyers was eliminated from playoff contention their General Manager Ron Hextall was named Canada’s General Manager for the upcoming IIHF World Championships in France and Germany.

Ron Hextall will have an opportunity to take players on his current roster such as Brayden Schenn, Sean Couturier, Claude Giroux if healthy and the likes of young players Travis Konecny and Jordan Weal. Schenn Couturier and Giroux all won gold at the World Championships in 2015.

Hextall may, however, decide not to select his players go insuring a full off-season to recover as the team pushes to make sure they don’t miss the postseason two years in a row.

Last season Canada’s General Manager Brad Treliving won gold without taking any Flames to Europe. A season later his club has returned to the postseason.

General Manager Ron Hextall will also get to take a closer look at potential KHL and other top European league stars that could make the move to North America in the summer. Ron Hextall has been no stranger to signing KHL free agents signing the Likes of Roman Lyubimov and Yevgeni Medvedev both played for Russia at the World Championships and were signed by the Flyers after having impressive tournaments.

Ron Hextall (Brandon, Man./Philadelphia, NHL) returns to the management staff, this time as general manager of Canada’s National Men’s Team. Hextall was a member of the management group at the 2014 IIHF World Championship and competed as a player at the 1992 IIHF World Championship. –HockeyCanada.ca
