56 games against only a handful of opponents should be quite the fun season for the Flyers.

With the new divisional alignments for this season, the Flyers will only be playing their games against seven opponents. The teams makes up the East Division, otherwise known as the Mass Mutual Division after the NHL partnered with sponsors for the season.

So the Flyers will play blocks of games against the same opponent, typically two games before moving on to another. The games are either played as a back to back or with one day in between, similar to how it is done in baseball.

They will play each opponent approximately seven to eight times throughout the season. It all will kick off on January 13th and run through the Flyers final game on May 8th. That is about a month later than the NHL regular season would typically end. The goal was to get back on track for the 2021-22 season.

The heaviest part of the schedule will fall between March and April when the Flyers play 15 games each. The lightest is obviously May when they only have a total of five games. Otherwise the other months feature 10-12 games.

The season kicks off as the Flyers open against the Penguins for a set of two games in three days. They will get two days off before playing their first back to back of the season. That will be against the Buffalo Sabres.

January 13th & 15th: Pittsburgh Penguins

January 18th & 19th: Buffalo Sabres

It’s a quick turnaround as they only have one day off before taking on Boston for a two games in three day split. They will have another two days off following that. It’ll be the New Jersey Devils before they then meet the team that knocked them out of the playoffs, the Islanders, for a back to back to end the first month.

January 21st & 23rd: Boston Bruins

January 26th & 28th: New Jersey Devils

January 30th & 31st: New York Islanders

So the first month starts off relatively easy with 10 games in 19 days. It begins to ramp up after that.

February

The Flyers will meet Boston for the third and fourth time after two days off to start the month. After a day off, they will meet up with Washington for the first time. It’s then another matchup with the Devils. Each of these sets of games are two in three days, followed by a day off in between.

February 3rd & 5th: Boston Bruins

February 7th & 9th: Washington Capitals

February 11th & 13th: New Jersey Devils

The Flyers will finally see the New York Rangers for the first time, over a month into the season. After a two day break, it’ll be one more game against Boston and then another against the Rangers. They will end the month facing the Sabres.

February 16th & 18th: New York Rangers

February 21st: Boston Bruins

February 24th: New York Rangers

February 26th & 28th: Buffalo Sabres

This is the only month that the Flyers do not have to deal with a back to back.

The Penguins are once again on the schedule to open up the month. There’s another quick game against Boston after two days off. And one game against the Sabres as well, not the first time they’ll see them this month. They will then see Washington for two games.

March 2nd & 4th: Pittsburgh Penguins

March 7th: Boston Bruins

March 9th: Buffalo Sabres

March 11th & 13th: Washington Capitals

The Flyers will finally have another back to back, this time against two different opponents. Though, they aren’t far from each other as they take on the Rangers and Islanders. They will play both teams twice during that six day span.

March 15th & 17th: New York Rangers

March 18th & 20th: New York Islanders

After a quick game against the Devils, the Flyers are back in New York to take on the Rangers once more. And it’s a back to back against the Sabres to finish up the month.

March 23rd: New Jersey Devils

March 25th & 27th: New York Rangers

March 29th & 30th: Buffalo Sabres

It’s a busy month as the Flyers play each of their eight opponents at least one time during the month of March. It is also one of their busiest months as we get into the heart of the season.

The Flyers get a few days off to start the month before a quick four in six set. They’ll take on the Islanders for one game before a back to back against Boston. They’ll finish this with another game against the Isles.

April 3rd: New York Islanders

April 5th & 6th: Boston Bruins

April 8th: New York Islanders

After a few days off, the Flyers will only have two days off between games one more time for the rest of the month. In fact, they’ll only have two days off twice between this stretch and the end of the season.

It’ll be one more game against Buffalo to finish up their season series. They will head to Pittsburgh one last time for two games. It’ll then be a back to back against the Capitals and Islanders before heading to New Jersey.

April 11th: Buffalo Sabres

April 13th & 15th: Pittsburgh Penguins

April 17th: Washington Capitals

April 18th: New York Islanders

April 20th: New Jersey Devils

The Flyers finally get a two day break after six games in 10 days. It does not get easier as they’ll have seven games in 12 days following that. It kicks off with the Rangers and Islanders. And lastly it’s the Capitals and Devils to end the month.

April 23rd: New York Rangers

April 25th: New York Islanders

April 27th: Washington Capitals

April 29th: New Jersey Devils

It’ll be a quick final five games to end the regular season. The Flyers play five days during the first eight days of the month. They will finish up their series against the Devils before a pair of back to backs to end the year. They’ll get two days in between these sets against the Penguins and Capitals.

April 1st: New Jersey Devils

April 3rd & 4th: Pittsburgh Penguins

April 7th & 8th: Washington Capitals

And that’ll do it for the Flyers regular season schedule. Hopefully they will be gearing up for another postseason run after this.

So that is four months with 56 games and seven total opponents. When we previewed this division before, the Flyers had a fairy good record looking at last season.

They posted an 11-5-3 record against this group of teams last season. That’s 14 out of a possible 19 points they captured. It won’t be that easy this season, especially with the heavily condensed schedule.

The Flyers are bringing back a very identical team to the one that made it to the second round this season. With a second year under Alain Vigneault and the return of Oskar Lindblom and Nolan Patrick, the Flyers are poised to make some noise in the East.

The amount of depth this team has should make them one of the favorites to come out of this division come playoff time. It’s all about fighting through a tough schedule.
