3. Keith “SONK” Yandle

There is a lot that is worth talking about when it comes to Keith Yandle. The new Flyer is a well known locker room leader. He currently has an incredible iron man streak. But when it comes to personality, Yandle has it in spades.

The “SONK” nickname is one that has reached an almost mythical status predominantly because of the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, where Yandle is a frequent guest. The nickname is born from a taunt Yandle yells after he fools opposing players on a behind the net fake. The Chiclets team has built up the nickname into a brand that encompasses Yandle as a player.

When it comes to sheer fame, this nickname definitely is the most notable. Seeing as Yandle is a brand new addition to the team though, it seemed unfair to put it at the top of this list.

2. Claude “Ginger G-sus” Giroux

The longest tenured captain in Flyers history has picked up a nickname or two in his time. None of them seem to reign quite as supreme as his “Ginger G-sus” moniker.

Harkening back to the days of “Only God saves more than Bernie” slogan, Giroux’s nickname has religious symbolism representing both the dedication of Flyers faithful and the true amount of love the fans have for their captain.

The nickname highlights his ginger hair, which beautifully meshes with the Flyers color scheme. It’s also a tribute to his incredible play and leadership during a rough patch of mediocre performance from the team for the majority of his tenure. Why isn’t it first on the list with all that significance? Because to be honest, it’s just not as fun to say.

1. Joel “Young Beezer” Farabee

Joel Farabee’s electric sophomore campaign led to this nickname becoming increasingly more recognizable. The nickname is yet another amazing development from the mind of Hayes. Young Beezer, an obvious shortening of Farabee, is one of the most creative name-based hockey nicknames.

The associated phrase “Young Beezer in the Cut” makes it worthy of the top spot. Imagine screaming out “Young Beezer in the cut” every time Farabee scores. It’s just that fun to say.

Have any nicknames that I forgot? Is there is an all-time great nickname that can’t go ignored? Nicknames are truly some of the most fun things to discuss and I definitely am looking forward to reading everyone’s opinions.
