Best Player: Gostisbehere, Arizona

Cap Advantage: Flyers

Future Assets:  Arizona

Grade: F

Sadly, this trade finally ended the debate over Gostisbehere and his value. When he slipped through waivers, the advanced metrics crowd and the corsi advocates may have been concerned that their evaluation of Gostisbehere may have been improperly skewed. The Flyers were forced to trade picks for him to play elsewhere, concrete proof that his value was less than nothing and far less than what corsi advocates had declared over the years.

Even as an ardent critic, this deal is terrible. Gostisbehere’s value is rock bottom right now, which is not the time to trade him. Rather than pay for someone to take him, a move which did nothing but lose assets, the front office could pivot and explore other options. Maybe they could’ve traded Travis Sanheim and the picks used to move Gostisbehere in a deal for Seth Jones. If he is really so bad (he’s not), partnering him with Jones may have given him a bump in production, making him more valuable. This was an expensive way to cut ties with Gostisbehere and gave away value needlessly. Team’s that are built for long term success do not make trades like this.
