After the NHL season was delayed due to a lockout, Giroux briefly went over to Germany to play with Eisbären Berlin with then-teammate Danny Briere. After returning for the season, he was named the 19th captain in Flyers franchise history, taking over for the injured Chris Pronger. A slow start for Giroux, things picked up when the team paired him with Jakub Voracek, someone he would spend a majority of his time with moving forward. Despite a career-high in goals for Voracek and 48 points in 48 games for Giroux, the team as a whole wasn’t able to piece it together. They missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

Giroux went on to sign his eight-year extension in the summer of 2013. Both extensions came before the final year of his current deal. A slow start out of the gate once again, both Giroux and the team found their groove. Infamously left off of the Canadian Olympic roster, he seemed to take that to heart. He finished that season with 28 goals and 86 points, was once again nominated for the Hart Trophy, but lost that to Sidney Crosby.

Fast forward a few years and Giroux once again found a new gear to his game. Making the move from center to the wing for the 2017-18 season, this allowed the Flyers to give top-line center duties to Sean Couturier. Both flourished with their new roles as Giroux amassed the 100-point mark for the first time in his career. He became just the sixth player in the franchise’s history to reach that feat. Despite a 102-point season, he finished fourth in Hart voting.

Entering the 2021-22 season, Giroux sits in second in games played for the franchise. He recently moved into third in points, as he should be able to find himself in second by the end of the season. Bobby Clarke’s franchise records are a long way off as Giroux would have to spend quite a few more years in Philadelphia to make that happen.

But that is a conversation for another day. Giroux has come a long way since Clarke famously forgot his name during the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. By now, everyone knows who Claude Giroux is.
