Philadelphia Flyers: Sunday Evening Rant Session

Note from Editor: Every Sunday, I will be sharing something a little less formal about the Philadelphia Flyers with you fine people. If there are any topics you would like me to touch upon, please feel free to share them with me in the comment section.

Before my freshman year of college, I was not a big fan of hockey. I never had anything against the sport; I just never had anybody to explain to me what was taking place on the ice. That all changed when I attended St. John’s University in the fall of 2007.

One of my roommates was a big time hockey guy from southern New Jersey, and bled orange and black. Every time there was a Flyers game on, he would put it on his computer and project it to the television. In the beginning, I only watched the games for something to do; but as time went on, I was completely hooked.

My roommate schooled me on the sport and the team he loved so dearly. In no time I was able to name every player on the Philadelphia Flyers roster and their positions. Growing up in New York everybody expected me to become a Rangers fan but there was no chance of that happening. Something about the Flyers style of hockey and the passion displayed by their fans hooked me instantly. Every game had the feeling of a playoff match-up and there was never a dull moment on the ice or in the stands.

By the time the 2008 Stanley Cup playoffs began, I considered myself a new member of Flyers Nation. I can remember the pit in my stomach that took weeks to disappear after the Flyers lost to the Penguins in the Eastern Conference Finals four games to one. One of the first lessons my roommate taught me about being a Flyers fan is the Pittsburgh Penguins are our sworn enemies. I have had nothing but feelings of hatred towards Sidney Crosby and anybody else who wears that sad excuse for a bird on their jersey ever since.

Although it took me until the age of eighteen to discover the orange and black, I am proud to now call myself a die-hard Philadelphia Flyers fan. I may not be as in your face and rambunctious as some; but I eat, sleep, and breathe Flyers hockey. There truly is no team that I admire more in any sport.

I bring all of this up because there truly is something special about the NHL team that represents the city of Philadelphia. They have the ability to attract even the least likely people onto their bandwagon, and have one of the biggest fan-bases in all of hockey.

There is a lot riding on this offseason for the Philadelphia Flyers. They are a few key pieces away from one again becoming fixtures in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. There is no doubt in my mind that by this time next year the Broad Street Buzz will be discussing postseason action, and not offseason speculation.

Keep the faith Flyers fans! We will be out of the darkness soon!
